Doomed

Defacement

I found the album nearly exactly as advertised…psychological collapse, disillusionment, and torment, and then some. The fleeting moments of melody might serve as that last fray of sanity to keep you from completely going under, but this was an extremely dark and dreadful affair.

"Doomed" is a mirror cracked from within. "It's not meant to comfort or offer resolution—it's an honest reflection of psychological collapse, disillusionment, and the torment of perceiving too much. These are wounds speaking. "Doomed" was composed under heavy feelings I just want to say fuck off and fuck your judgments, I exist to make you hate your existence." The album has eight songs, and "Mournful" is first; a two-minute mood setter. The mood is deadly, and you are forewarned about what comes next. There is static in the music, and also some somber tones…even a bit of melody, but it is hard to find. "Portrait" is next, and it's a horrid affair of grunts, gutturals, and thick guitars. You can search everywhere, but you won't find even a spec of melody, until close to the end, when hopeless tones take over.

A nine-minute Death Metal song? Why not. "Unexplainable" fits that bill. It reminds me of a journey south, very south, until things get hotter and hotter, and you realize you are headed to the underworld. There is a good mixture of nothingness combined with empty feelings of rage. "Forlorn," by contrast, is another short segue to the second half of the album, and it's a bit like the first song. "Worthless" is very heavy, angry, and chaotic. It is also quite lively, fueled by a steady train of relentless riffs as well as some deep, despondent tones. The combination of these two is like a two punch combo in boxing. The first one hits hard, and the second lays you out.

"Unrecognized" is another punch to the head of torment. Just when you think you couldn't possibly take any more, the band piles on ten more shots just for good measure. "Clouding" is the final segue song leading to the final track. "Absent" closes the album, with a return to the forging energy of previous songs. The vocal screams remind you of the anger, while the churning riffs provide the cement that holds it all together. I found the album nearly exactly as advertised…psychological collapse, disillusionment, and torment, and then some. The fleeting moments of melody might serve as that last fray of sanity to keep you from completely going under, but this was an extremely dark and dreadful affair.
