Good day to you fellow music fans. I'm back today to bring you the new album of famed Rock idols DEF LEPPARD titled simply "Def Leppard". These guys didn't get it easy in the last 10-15 years; the critics was on their case with the last few albums that came out short of their usual greatness. Well, maybe this one can bring you back some of the good memories of the old DEF LEPPARD.
In what is the longest hiatus between two of their albums, they concocted a pretty decent album for us to enjoy. While not being their best work, it is also far from being their worst. It does feel like they tried to bring back the old flame of their 80s.
This album gives us a good balance of ballads and Hard Rock songs. 8 out of the 14 songs of this album are good old 80s, 90s style Rock that we all love and cherish. "Let's Go" and "Dangerous" opens up the tracks really well with a faster pace 80s Hair Rock, then goes down in tempo a bit with a more Blues bass line in "Man Enough". Down to "We Belong" which is an emotion packed Rock ballad that can leave you wanting more of this.
Quite literally, this album feels like a wave, you start fast and go down and tempo until it starts rising again in "Invincible". This is followed by "Sea of Love", which pretty much just made my point. You are surfing on a sea going up and down all through this album.
The song "Energized" has me a bit puzzled; there was some static noise in the sound on some part of it and I couldn't decide if it was intentional or not. If it is, I don't think it was necessary, it really didn't bring anything to the song other than me wondering if my file was broken. This song and the next mark the middle point of the album, I wonder if this is why they are titled "Energized" and "All Time High". The latter is very well named; it is one of the high points of the album, being faster paced and more energetic - qualities that fits well with Joe's timeless voice.
Right after this high point, the tempo goes back down on this more Nashville style Country Rock "Battle of My Own". They incorporated so many different styles on this album, yet manage to always stay rooted around their original Rock sound.
Let's break the wave of songs and jump to the conclusion of the album. "Blind Faith" is one of my favourite ballads of the album. This song is slow and full of emotions; really an amazing way to wrap this all up. I can't say if it's a sign that they have faith in a future album or they have "Blind Faith" that the fans will like the album. It could go either way I guess.
I have to say that it is a pretty decent album all in all. Probably the best DEF LEPPARD has offered us in this millennium. If this would end up being their last album, then at least they wouldn't go out on a low note. If you were unhappy with the last few albums, it could reconcile your faith the band.
