Death - Spiritual Healing (2-CD Reissue) album cover

The name DEATH seems appropriate for the band that helped get the Death Metal genre moving. Chuck Schuldiner is known as the forefather of Death Metal and it's too bad Schuldiner isn't around today still making quality material such as "Spiritual Healing". He passed away in 2001 and the whole Death Metal scene hasn't been the same since. I think Metal as a whole needs more artists like Schuldiner. Schuldiner was not afraid to experiment with his sound as you can tell if you listen to an early record like "Spiritual Healing" and then put on "Sound Of Perseverance" the difference is staggering. Even though the overall DEATH sound evolved greatly each record was still definitely

a DEATH album. Mr. Schuldiner never believed in having the same line up twice in fear of recreating the same sound of a previous record. I think since he was always trying to create a different sound each time he recorded helped make his music so much better than the majority of releases today. Schuldiner made sure his fans never got bored when listening to his records; it would have been interesting to see where he went with his next release. But, to keep this from turning into a review of Chuck Schuldiner let's focus on DEATH's 1990 release, "Spiritual Healing". Relapse Records was nice enough to reissue this classic in a few different formats, an entire box set with a ton of DEATH goodies, a two disc, and three disc set. Each format comes with the original cd (which I am reviewing), some have a second disc with jam tracks and instrumentals, and a few that have the third cd has a live performance included on it. I will most likely be purchasing the 3 disc set if not the entire box set.

Reviewing this CD was the first time I had ever heard "Spiritual Healing" and all I can say is that I should have listened to it earlier. "Living Monstrosity" starts off immediately with remorseless guitar riff and pounding double bass. The tempo changes a few times making it interesting and quite enjoyable. The lyrical content over the entire album is very different from death metal bands today. With today's bands lyrics it's all about brutality, but with DEATH they are more about moral and social issues. Believe me, the title is very misleading. "Defensive Personalities" showcases the variety of Schuldiner's playing style. This track has lots of brutal riffs and very intricate melodies, not to mention the mandatory solo that seems to be in every song! The title track has the best riff on the album in my opinion, it's slow and chunky. The little guitar harmony at the beginning and throughout the song has a sort of haunting sound to it which is a neat little touch. The solo in "Spiritual Healing" is phenomenal; perhaps the best off this album. Even though there is a strong emphasis on guitar work the drums on this entire album hold an unquestionable presents and it's nice to hear such a full percussion supporting an equally good guitar line. Track number six, "Low Life" has some awesome slower riffs along with faster ones creating good complexity for an enjoyable listen.

Over all its what you'd expect from a DEATH release, fast in some spots, slow in others, killers solos, and very robust drum section. There is not a bad song on this record and it doesn't get boring. Everyone needs some DEATH intheir lives so go pick this up as soon as you can.
