Death Engine - Ocean album cover

From their EPK, "this third opus is anchored in a more personal and introspective approach. The ocean represents a state of transformation and transition, a symbol of an uncertain world. For DEATH ENGINE, this new album is the end of one cycle and the beginning of another. The sometimes nihilistic aspect of his music is transformed to bring a new horizon. In an almost therapeutic movement, the composer and lyricist intends to get rid of his torments." The album has seven songs.

"Hyperion" is the first. A heavy, pounding and desolate riff open the album, with a dutiful march that sounds like you are being led to a gas chamber. The vocals are harsh and hopeless in their delivery. "Leaden Silence" is another plodding and weighted affair. What trails behind the music are all of your hopes, dreams, and anything good about your life...dragged behind you to shreds violently. "Pulled Down" is a bit longer, so the development of the nihilistic sound can be realized. The vocals are horrendous, and you can feel the soul being sucked from your body lower and lower. Clean vocals make their first appearance in the chorus, and they are about as solemn and monotone as they get. The heavy bass notes at the end leave no doubt.

"Lack" comes out of the gate quicker and with more drum presence. The steady but dissonant riffing creates a world of grey, where possibilities are dashed by insecurity and fear. "Lack" refers to something being missing. In this case, it is your motivation. "Mess" begins with clean guitars and a gritty, dirty feeling, akin to being stuck in a dead end job where you are buried in the mud all day. The mid-section has clean guitars, but they are no less effective at pushing this desolate sound, and the ending is gut-wrenching. "Dying Alone" really sums up the sentiment on the album, and is there truly a worse fate? Thick bass notes carry much of the opening sound, pounding in your head. The clean vocals are tinged with bleak isolation as devoid of feeling as the title.

"Empire" closes the album. From the description above, the key to the album's sound was the singer and lyricist being able to unload his pain and suffering. However, the tones of the song are just as miserable as the previous songs. Perhaps in one final push, he lays it all on the line, and retreats into darkness, to speak no more. Overall, this was a very soul crushing album to listen to. The desperate tones speak of loss of loved ones, loss of hope, and loss of one's self. But therein lies the wonders of music. Some is there to make you feel positive, and alive. Others are there to remind you of the darker side of life...the area less traveled, and the path in the dark. Do you dare to traverse it?
