NU^L
Dead Slow Hand

From Bandcamp, “The new EP “NU^L” is a four-part ritual – a descent into darkness where black metal becomes both a tool of spiritual destruction and purification. From the Luciferian invocation to the final revelation of Baphomet, the listener is drawn into a vision that is ecstatic and lethal. The band has moved beyond pure lo-fi without losing its raw intensity – layered guitars, ritualistic vocals and unforgiving song structures form a powerful whole. O’s presence from within the British occult scene adds an authoritative voice to the work. “NU^L” was mixed and mastered by Harpak Karnig of the Ardawahisht Kollective, enhancing the sonic depth of the release while staying true to its raw spirit. Four songs. Four steps into the collapse of light.”
The album has four songs, and “Morning Star Ascendant” is first. A thick, harrowing Black Metal sound roars out of the gates, with incensed vocals and the production is overly treble to boot. It’s fairly obvious that this is a FWOBM influenced album. “In the Darkness” begins with a slow, solemn sound that reminds me of tears of pain running down someone’s face. Rage comes in following that, and the two complimentary styles wrestle intently with one another. When you really stop and think about it, these two emotions are close to one another even know they seem like opposites. “Forest of NU^L” is the lone single from the album, and it’s another deeply depressive affair, although the vocal screams give it life, and keep it from fully giving into the darkness.
“Revelations” is the final song, and it has a lot of power backing it. For me, it’s like when a jet engine starts up and the ring of fire it shoots out is far reaching. Again, it balances despair with rage quite well, but there just isn’t a lot of variation from song to song. Sprinting towards the final curtain, rage overtakes and outraces the despondence. I did find the album to be lethal, but not so ecstatic, and the production was still fairly lo-fi on the scale. There were some layers in the guitar work, but mostly, I hear FWOBM inspired music, and it just wasn’t able to break out of lift much off the ground.
