Anthology
Dead Label
DEAD LABEL give it to us fast, heavy, and loud with their latest release "Anthology" that will keep you headbanging throughout the six song EP. Moshing is inevitable with this one. From the first song, "Deadweight", this band hits with their cut-the-shit-start-the-pit attitude and they never let up on it. I was immediately into it. Vocalist Danny Hall has deep and brutal lows, but they are balanced out nicely by some highs, which I was really impressed with in the third song "Triggered" when there's a trade-off between the two in the chorus. I also really like the highs in the second song "Pure Chaos" at about 3:36. They really seemed to find the perfect balance between the two vocal styles in all of the songs.
The guitar solo at the end of "Triggered" is impressive. This is definitely my favorite track on the EP. I can't express enough how much the whole thing had me banging my head. I think I'd enjoy seeing this band live, if I ever got the chance. Hopefully, their live show is as intense as their music. I thought the melody in the chorus of "False Messiah" was pretty catchy, especially for something this heavy. This song has strong metalcore vibes, with it being a lot more catchy-sounding than the rest of the songs. But that doesn't mean it's bad. It's just a little different from the rest of the EP. And there's another great guitar solo near the end of this one.
Pissed off in traffic? You dealt with awful customers at work? Life is generally annoying? This is the perfect angry music album to help you deal with those emotions. "There is no hope for change/The hate will sustain" Hall screams in the last song "Dystopian Complex." The vocal work in here isn't the best I've ever heard in metal, but it certainly fits their music and their style - it's a great angry sound. "Dystopian Complex" is another song on here I really enjoy. It's a killer way to end the EP. This song goes really hard and leaves you something worth remembering. The first song and the last song are always important, and they put it together perfectly. Even the ending of the song is awesome with the words "dystopian complex" screamed out for the final push. It's like their own version of a finishing move in Mortal Kombat - finish him! Fatality!
I kind of wished this was a full album rather than just six songs. It went by fast and I was enjoying the hell out of it. It's not surprising to learn Dead Label has toured with huge metal bands like Gojira and Machine Head. I expect to hear more good things from them and see them tour with some more big names.
