Spectral Tyranny

Dead Chasm

Overall, this was a decent album but it was hard to get a gauge based on just three songs. All of the elements one might expect from the genre are there, it’s just that the band didn’t do much stretching out from the norm. Purity is one thing, but pushing yourself is another. I would recommend that the band engage in a little experimentation next time to help put some distance between them and others.

From Bandcamp, “Italian death/doom metal band DEAD CHASM bring forth their latest material that promises to be their most potent output yet. There's not a second wasted on these three songs, which are dense with stomach-churning riffs and doom passages that are all but enveloping, while the execution remains tighter than ever before. They make everything work like clockwork as a three-piece unit and there's not a single area where they leave something to be desired. It's all done in a sincere manner and that too with the right organic sound that retains some of the rawness. DEAD CHASM have come up with a bunch of songs that are virtually faultless but more importantly are of the kind that would resonate with any true fan of death/doom metal.”

The album has only three songs, and “Beneath Decadent Shadows” is first. For Doom Metal, it’s awful short, but not short on the hopeless qualities of the genre. The guitars are low, filthy, and crunchy, and the vocals are mostly guttural. Unlike a lot of Doom, however, it does pick up at times to frantic paces. The title track is another shorter song, and has straight Death Metal elements to go along with the deep and cavernous Doom, especially the way the guitars move at times in line with the drums. There are also some subtle shifts in the meter, showcasing the band’s talent for navigating these things. “Spawn in Absurdity” closes the album, with a little more length and girth. It has another hopeless sound, but also features some shifts in pacing.
