Dauþuz - Grubenfall 1727 album cover

DAUÞUZ is Germanic for "Death". It would be awkward to call yourself Death and think people will think of you rather than the gods of Death Metal. This is their fifth release, their second EP, along with three other full-length release. There are several more well-known German Black Metal bands including: ABSURD; GRAVEWORM and OBSCURITY, just to name a few. Will DAUÞUZ join the list of well-known bands in the future? This release could help or hinder that. Let's find out.

"Grubenfall 1727" opens up this 3-Track. It builds up slowly as it starts, a well-known and well-used trick done by many. It feels like it is building to something big. It is taking its time. The instrumental kick-off after the 2-minute mark explodes into more heard of territories that many of us have heard other bands do. The high tempo doesn't last too long before returning to a progressive stage and limit. For me, this doesn't do enough to act as a great song to base an album on, but I've heard a lot worse.

"Kerker der Ewigkeit" still keeps the tempo lower than possibly should be, but the beat keeps on going. It becomes too boring towards the mid-section. There is nothing new, no progression nor experimentalisms. The song keeps ticking over, but soon becomes non-relatable, almost like background music. This song could have and maybe should have gone in so many different directions, it just never seemed to spark enough energy to change it.

"Die letzte Fahrt" starts off as an acoustic song, but with the vocals still screaming. It doesn't really work until the full instrumental side of things comes into play. The song goes back to what we have heard so far, which is nothing new, so fails to make much of an impact. The song goes into its own shell and becomes boring, the same issues as the previous song. It does nothing to change the stance or direction of the album. Around the 6-minute mark it retracts to the acoustic ideal once more. This one is seemingly going to repeat itself, kicking back into life, somewhat, after the acoustic side of things. For a song this length it could have changed 2 or 3 times with something different. It did not change enough and I think it's a wasted chance.

Well this album got very boring very quickly. There is not enough on this album to change my opinion on it. There are several points on this album where you can think that it could have changed total direction, added something new and taken the progression of the album into a much better album. The songs could be fine on an eight-track, full-length album, but the rest of the songs would need to change a lot. The issue with lack of change is people can switch off, or simply just skip. The final song will probably have people skipping it before getting half way through.
