We Are Him
Darvaza

DARVAZA is a Black Metal band with International members formed in 2015. "We Are Him" is their second full length release, and it has seven songs. "Holy Blood" is first. There is some opening groundwork laid with harrowing background sounds, but the main riff is pretty simple in scope. In fact, it borders on Thrash Metal in that regard. Even the vocals are high pitched screeches that you often hear in Black Metal…they are throatier. It's frightening, but it doesn't have a lot of teeth or that deep bite you may be used to. "A Last Prayer in Gethsemane" is a little hastier in terms of having that quality of being chased in the dark. Gethsemane is, of course, the garden on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, famous as the site where Jesus prayed in agony the night before his crucifixion.
"Chaos.Fire.Devotion" is almost a continuation of the previous song, with similar haste, and similar pacing. That is, until a deadly march ensues. It just doesn't last long enough however for the sound to really sink in, although the closing piano notes are excellent. "Lazarus" is the friend of Jesus who raised him from the dead…again, if you believe in that sort of thing. It has a slower and heavier sound, and it seems to come at you on a stiff wind from the North…cold, sterile, and pure. "Blood of No-One" uses thick, weighted bass notes and another simple riff to carry what sounds like sledgehammers hitting concrete. "Son of God, listen to me…" he screams. You can definitely hear the anger in his vocals.
"Slaying Heaven" moves with slower, and brutal tones…the kind that sound like what it might be watching heaven be defeated…depending on what side you are on of course. You are either crying, or laughing, at the event. "Darvaza" is the final song, and it's a hard-hitting, aggressive song that cuts deep with feelings of anguish. I have always said, rage and despair can indeed be married within the same album. The album seemed to improve the longer I listened to it and with each forthcoming song. I also appreciated the religious themes within the music. Indeed, Black Metal was founded on religion…anti-religion of course. This was a solid effort from the duo.
