DARK is a Swedish band that delves into the Gothic/Doom Metal genre to give us an interesting new EP, "Inside The Void". Using two guitars and a solid rhythm section, DARK has given us four new tracks that vary from haunting to sinister to eerie and back. The EP will be independently released on April 30, 2021.
Starting off with "Finally Home," the record launches with a quick drum beat and a quirky guitar riff. The tune then levels out for the first verse and settles into a nice rhythm. The chorus reminds us their time is now, no matter who is against them. The eerie tone choices for the interludes is really nice, giving the song a depth and feel that is very satisfying.
"One Of Us" comes next and leads off with a haunting piano section that is a prelude to the riff. This is a really nice set up and flows well. The bass line during the first verse is subdued, despite being out in front. This bass line gives a great lead into the guitar/chanting section that fills the middle of the song. The chants are well placed and add a lot of emotion to the song. They make the song feel bigger and a bit gloomier, which fits the sound.
The third song on this EP is "Die Together," a slow burner with another prominent bass line and some interesting guitar work. The main riff is catchy and fits into the composition well. The drum section is straight-forward and in no hurry to get anywhere, pacing the song perfectly. The plodding rhythm trudges along at a steady pace, going from start to finish while never trying to get ahead of itself.
Finally, "Memories" wraps up the record with more bass and piano working together with a steady drum beat leading the way. The guitars come in and out, filling the soundscape with just the right amount of power.
This record never gets in a hurry. It's a nice, slow piece filled with really nice tones and textures. The vocals are reminiscent of Peter Steele (TYPE O NEGATIVE). This is a band that does not need to try to shred and thrash. They use creative tones and tempos to paint a wall of sound that requires moderation, not speed. The number of notes relies on quality, not quantity. DARK sets a mood very well, giving the listener a well rounded story in each song.
