The Great Unknown

London based Rock outfit DAMN DICE has been working diligently and performing hard since their EP "Wild 'N' Ready" was released in 2013, with their heavy-hitting debut album "The Great Unknown" having been released in April of 2015. "The Great Unknown" delivers pure, infectious energy, and you get the feeling that the band really enjoys themselves and the music they create. I can only imagine what their live shows are like: lots of throwing water into the audience, plenty of sexual innuendo and mountains of spandex. DAMN DICE reminds me of the type of music that would be played during a teenage-movie party montage. Footage of ping-pong balls splash into red cups, beer-bellied men doing keg stands and people making out indiscriminately on torn couches in hazy rooms. The first track, "Power" is an immediate attention grabber with a bouncy riff and vocals that cross the border between NWBHM and Glam-Rock, and "Power" sets you up for the remainder of the album. "The Great Unknown" is non-stop catchy fun that lacks the gimmick of many similar bands (looking at you, THE DARKNESS). DAMN DICE'S physical appearance and sound would be right at home in the 80's Hair-Metal scene: they were even kind enough to prove this point by adding the requisite ballad track, "Home". If DAMN DICE were around thirty years ago they would have surely stood the test of time along with bands like MÖTLEY CRÜE or VAN HALEN, except I wouldn't hate them. Sure, their songs lack any sort of deep meaning and, apart from the solos, sound simple as hell but they make up for it by being as catchy as an STD at a foam party. DAMN DICE makes no attempt to be taken as deeply serious; they are simply pure Rock for the sake of Rock. I mean, damn, they even sell lighters with attached bottle openers on their official website (although, any true rocker knows how to open a bottle with the lighter alone). "The Great Unknown" is twelve tracks of party meant to be played on repeat. It's a solid debut album that begs you to let it loose, shut up, and simply enjoy some unfiltered Hard-Rock.
