Black/Death/Doom Metal trio CULT BURIAL present their second full-length album titled "Reverie of the Malignant." The album has seven songs, and "Umbra" is the first. Following a slow opening, the sound that follows has some Progressive tinges to it, especially in that first riff. There are also some unusual sounds when it comes to the genre, like the lead breaks. So far, I am liking their dark sound. "Awaken" has deep bass guitar notes among the thick rhythms. More Doom elements come out in this song, as well as a sense of your own mortality. Perhaps that is the awakening they reference.

"Parasite" begins with meaty bass notes that reverberate in your soul. Many of the tones in this song speak of hopelessness, and anguish, and the music is cold, and aloof. "Paralysed" has eerie background music to go along with the blast beats in the drums. Again, some of the chord progressions are unusual, which keeps the listener engaged. "Strive" has more meaty bass notes and some harrowing sounds. The desperate sound develops slowly, and the demons have a chance to materialize. It steadily grows with more and more layers, putting more nails in your coffin.

"Existence" is a more concise song with an equal dose of anger and depression. The way the band finds balance in these two elements is noteworthy. The guitar solo sings the blues well. The lengthy "Oblivion" closes the album, and it takes in several deep breaths. There are staccato attacks early, followed by short ambient pauses. Just after the half-way mark, the song expands, and it rides this wave to completion. Overall, this was a solid album that combined a few subgenres nicely, and there were alternating tones of veiled rage and hopelessness. There were also tinges of Progressive music here, though they are subdued.
