Cryptosis

Last time I heard this band, was as Distillator, and a pretty extreme thrash metal. Think Slayer mixed with Coroner and Teutonic thrash metal band. Back in 2020 they did change their name, and music style in a way, to progressive thrash metal. I really like that they did change the name. When a band go for a new style, and keep the name, in my humble opinion, that is like don't give the fans a fair warning. I mean, very simple, if you as a band are good enough with the new style, the fans will come.

And that is what Cryptosis has done, the new style from this album, are pretty far from the old. Sure, It's still thrash metal, but more dark, more heavy, more atmosphere and has black metal influences, and it is progressive. And yes, there are synthesizers in their music, but as soon you start listening, you understand why. The first track, "Prologue - Awakening" instrumental, could fit in a science fiction movie. The second track "Faceless Matter" set a kind of statement for this album, it's probably one of the best progressive thrash metal track I ever heard....the thrash metal is there, but also so much atmosphere. Rhythm changes that work perfect, it's dark and at the same time beautiful. Use a keyboard, and get even more nuances from the rest of the instruments, and the almost a bit of haunted voice, from Laurens Houvast, works so good. If I did go track by track, it would end in a book.

So I do as I used to do, take the ones that really stands out. But worth to mention is the tracks "Static Horizon" and "The Silent Call". The feeling of go black thrash metal, is really strong here. And again it works, those 2 tracks reminds me a bit of the 80s black trash metal, a bit Merciless and Mefisto. The track "Ascending" has little of everything, that this album has to offer, and you get a hint of the black metal, but more the 90s. Strong melody in the track and it's the easiest track to listen to. But Cryptosis is a thrash metal band, and the foundation of trash is there all the time, but sometimes weaker other times stronger. "Reign of Infinite" are really pure thrash, the track "Cryptosphere" is actually more like technical thrash, and is for me, one of the top 3 tracks on the album.

And as I did write in the beginning, last I did hear this band the name was Distillator and another kind of thrash. So head over to Cryptosis and Celestial Death, just like that: was actually an excellent experience. Cryptosis are still thrash metal, but progressive and influences from black metal, more atmosphere, I really like it.
