Void
Coma Rossi
COMA ROSSI is a progressive/post rock band originally from Bangalore, India, now based in Germany and UK. Sonically, they strive to find that contemplative silence and a familiar melancholy wrapped under atmospheric, saturated guitars, reeking synth textures and explosive drums sounds, like when gearing up for a storm out at the sea. This album "Void" is about dealing with absence, related to places which we immerse ourselves in or people who have been close to us. It takes one through the debilitating pain of detaching the self to caress the thick needles of loss. It saddles one with the discomforting grief that hits in waves. It catapults one into a gorge of charred distressing memories.
The album has nine songs, and “Wither” is first; a short and somber introduction that segues into “Waves it Time.” The song comes at you with a thick embrace of despondent and ominous sounds, with depressive vocals. It wallows in lament throughout, and those emotions are strong, tugging at the listener. “Burning” has a slow and steady sound, where contrasting feelings are locked in battle with one another. In one hand likes hope, and in the other, despair. The Post Rock elements are strong within that overgrown guitar sound. “Falling Apart” has the exact sound that you would picture as the world is falling to pieces around you, and you go about your business, preparing for the end.
In many ways, the lengthy “The Red Sky” encapsulates a lot about the album. When the red sky rising in the morning, it means that blood has been shed the night before. A sturdy stricture eases in, followed by guitar notes that feel so heavy. No vocals give the song a chance to develop, and with each passing guitar note, it is like another nail being hammered into your coffin. “Oblivion” hangs in the air like a dense fog that you really can’t see until you are up against it, and guitars straddle the thin line between hope and despair. “Small Ideas” has those saturated guitars that they talk about…they are so thick and overgrown here, and also present the lighter side of the album. Soak this one in, it is beautiful in its deep longing for something better.
“Farm of Light” has more ethereal sounds, and they are so delicate, when you reach out and grab them, they disappear in front of your eyes. “In Circles” closes the album, and it has heavy structures that come across as fragile as glass. Loss is the theme of the album. People deal with loss very differently. Some retreat within, and carry the pain without the outside world knowing it. Others wear it like paint on the face. The poignant and emotionally tolling music reflect both of these ways, and more. At times it is so beautiful, I want to swallow it all, although that thread of loss that runs through is deeply burdensome, and other times, it forces me into thought. They would do well with a dedicated vocalist, but this is an album that you will want to hear.
