Isolation
Coldworld
"Composed during the pandemic-induced lockdown period of 2020/2021, "Isolation" features some of COLDWORLD's most expressive compositions to date. Managing to transcend the conventional sounds pursued in what is best described as the "Ambient/Depressive" Black Metal subgenre, COLDWORLD's newest sonic endeavor draws listeners into an incredibly immersive soundscape, rife with lush classical instrumentation and ethereal, yet occasionally harrowing vocals." The album contains eight songs.
"Leere" is the first. It's a short mood-setter. Mist clears in the background from days of soaking rain but showers continue. You feel drained, and listless. The sonority is kept to a minimum, but an eerie keyboard note swells and dulls. "Soundtrack to Isolation" begins with a despondent Black Metal sound with a slow grind. Like a sluggish headache that just won't go away, it stretches on for days. Layers of sound are added piece by piece, as you peer into the endless grey skies with a sigh. Violin notes bring the song to an early crescendo, followed by a few step back into ambient territory, and then a heavier push towards the end.
"Walz" is a more straightforward Black Metal sound, with thick guitars and roaring vocals. Ambient background elements keep the song depressive, especially as the sound drops and picks back up again in between. "We Are Doomed" really says it all in a nutshell. The slow, hulking pace with violins sounds about as depressive as the Red Wedding in Game of Thrones. Each note reverberates in your guy like a rattling over-sized rock. The way the vocals are sung just sounds like someone who is at the end of their rope. "Five" is another short, transitional song, with easy flowing water in the background.
"Wound" is exactly how is sounds. A wound you thought had healed years ago suddenly resurfaces, bringing pain back to the forefront, with thick guitars and harrowing vocals. Relief comes briefly, followed by more moments of excruciating pain. "Isolation Stagnation" is all about the feelings that are conjured up when listening to it. Maybe it is a lost love, or something more serious. But once those feelings bubble up, they can't be ignored. You have to re-live the event over and over again, no matter how painful. You are left with the frigid and sharp memories of the event. "Hymnus" closes the album. This song features a smidge of electronica and the twang of funereal guitar notes...something completely different. Suddenly, it darkens. The wolf has been let loose in the garden, and he snarls as he approaches. There is no way out. You clutch your loved one as he sinks his teeth into your flesh.
I love their sense of style on the album. It's not just another ambient/depressive Black Metal album. Indeed, you can feel their laments deep inside your body, hollowing out your organs, blood and connective tissue, leaving only cold bones behind. The skeleton that is left is incapable of feeling anything, and walks the earth alone, without a heart or soul. How beautifully depressing is that?
