CLOVEN ALTAR are an American Heavy Metal duo comprised of vocalist Dustin Umberger and multi-instrumentalist Cederick Forsberg. "Enter The Night" marks the duo's latest full-length production. CLOVEN ALTAR's sound can be characterized as a combination of old school Heavy Metal and Power Metal filled with soaring vocals and speedy riffs.
"Heart of the Beast" serves as the opening track for the album, and unfortunately the vocals on this track seem a bit weak in comparison to the riffs and drums; nevertheless, although the falsetto wail sounds a bit off, the intricately-crafted guitar solo makes up for its flaws. Cederick does a stupendous job with the guitar solo. In my opinion, Dustin's vocal prowess does not shine until the second track "Die For Metal". A track that can easily become the next Heavy Metal anthem, "Die For Metal" opens up with an incredibly high-pitched wail and intensely complex guitar riffs, all of which ends with gusto, crafting a memorable song that is both short and sweet. "Theories of Specules" is rather reminiscent of 80s Heavy Metal, filled with solid vocals, fantasy-laden lyrics and of course, an impressive guitar solo.
A grandiose guitar solo graces the introduction of the title track "Enter The Night". The riffs here are remarkably good, however, Dustin's vocals once again pale in contrast to the powerful drum beats and riffage around him. The catchy "Streets of Rage", set amidst a steady drumming backdrop, is rather reminiscent of 80s Heavy Metal tunes. The album finally closes off with the high-octane "Burning Steel". Packed with complex riffing, thunderous drums and an unforgettable chorus, this song makes a really good closing track, however, I find that the song can be better without the unnecessary profanity.
CLOVEN ALTAR are an underrated band, and "Enter The Night" is a powerful album, packed with whirring guitar solos and sonorous vocals. Cederick is an excellent guitarist, but I believe Dustin's vocals can be improved to add more gravitas to the songs. Nevertheless, I firmly believe that CLOVEN ALTAR deserves much more attention and thus "Enter The Night" should be listened to at least once, especially if you are into old school Heavy Metal.
