Cirith Gorgor - Visions Of Exalted Lucifer album cover

It seems like an eternity since I have covered a dark and twisted Black Metal band. Now, CIRITH GORGOR give me the chance to do just that. Formed some 20 years ago in the Netherlands, some will say CIRITH GORGOR are veterans to the scene. Before you even listen to the music, their promo images are sure to let you know you're in for a twisted ride.

Right from the first second it's evident that CIRITH GORGOR are not letting any modern-day influence cast their spell on them, their sound is straight out of the 90's. They have that melodic, solid beat and riffage with the linear, one-tone vocal style that is apparent in most 90s Black Metal. Even though their sound is very similar to other bands of that era, they still manage to sound original most of the time. Although there are some tracks ("Salvator" did it for me) where they seem to just blend in to the backdrop of Black Metal.

My absolute favourite track comes in the form of "Of Black Dimensions..." It features a slower than normal beat, with some eerie spoken words that I cannot understand. If you've read my reviews before, you'll know that I absolutely love eerie, creepy, evil and thought-provoking music - which is exactly what this track is. While some may not really consider it a song, more of an interlude, I think this is their best track, everything about the writing style and production is on point.

Now, speaking about production, I must say that it is good for the majority of the album but in a few places (The title track is a prime example) the vocals tend to overpower a lot of the music which can be very frustrating to listen to if you like focusing on certain elements throughout the song, when the vocals kick in, sometimes it's hard to hear anything else.

Overall, this is a solid album that I really enjoyed. It's been a long time since I've listened to a new release that was so evil and Satanic. This is a quality album that one needs to listen to whenever they're making their Blood Sacrifices to our Dark Lord.
