Founded in 2017, CHAOS OVER COSMOS is an international progressive metal and technical death project led by Polish guitarist and composer Rafał Bowman. With a rotating lineup of vocalists from around the world, including artists from Spain, the USA, and Australia, the project continues to evolve its sound in bold and unpredictable ways. Despite the distance separating its members, the music has always been created entirely through remote collaboration. On the new album, "The Hypercosmic Paradox," Bowman joins forces with Pakistani vocalist Taha Mohsin to deliver five new tracks that push the project's mix of technical solos, precision, speed, and cosmic atmosphere to new extremes. The album will be released on December 15, 2025.
The album has five songs, and "Nostalgia for Something That Never Happened" is first. Out of the gate, comes a flurry of lead guitar notes that would impress even the most technically minded players. The Progressive sound is rooted in electronics as well, but it breathes with atmosphere and melody, and their sense of timing is impeccable. "When the Void Laughs" is a nine minute opus. When they talk about precision, I'm not sure you understand what that means until you listen. Each of the lead breaks are struck in perfect meter, and although the harsh vocals carry a massive bite, melody continues to flow through the track. The drums roll at lightning speed and the leads sparkle overtop.
"Even Horizon Rebirth" is another marvel of technical skill that still holds the melody as the forefront of the album. They shift the meter often, and don't ever miss a beat, and the atmospheric background gives it an "outer world" feeling. "The Cosmo-Agony: Requiem" is another lengthy song. It opens with tentative tones, akin to something you might hear in outer space. In comes the riff, leads, lightning speed drums, and heavy bass, and they combine together in a synergy that leaves you with a heightened sense. The lead runs are so fast, you couldn't count them if you tried, and the backing atmosphere is used to give the song some real texture.
The short "The Fractal Mechanism" is the final song, and it's mostly an electronic groove. Few band possess this level of musicianship and skill, and even fewer are able to breathe life into heavily technical compositions. Rather than relying on the riff and the vocals to do most of the talking, the band uses electronics, synth, and ambiance to augment the songs. The result is an album that is as dexterous as it is an absolute joy to listen to.
