Society’s Pact With Satan
Cathedral

Only one song? Yes, it is just the one, but it is being brought to you by CATHEDRAL, the band that had a very successful career, but ceased to exist in 2013. Well, you wouldn't say this if and when you realise that this one song is just under half an hour long. And what's even more impressive, it doesn't feel that way at all. For those who don't know who CATHEDRAL is, they were a Doom/Stoner Metal band from Coventry, a city in the West Midlands of England. They started life in 1989, and in the 24 years of existence they gave us 10 studio albums, 4 live recordings, 10 splits and 6 EPs. the last one of the latter being the one I'm about to review; "Society's Pact With Satan".
How do say this in the best possible way; this is like listening to a Horror Movie soundtrack. What that does is make the time go by fast and you just don't realise that you have been listening to just one song by these Doom masters. The very unhinging soundscapes and noises in the beginning of "Society's Pact With Satan" will fit into any Horror movie, before the slow and deliberate voice of Lee Dorrian in conjunction with the extremely doomy music accompanying it lets itself be known. A little bit further on the tempo goes up, the heaviness increases and the intensity reaches boiling point. That is where the very apt and fitting guitar solo makes a very good appearance, filling the gap given perfectly. After this the song simply stays Heavy and Hard hitting, making sure that you realise that CATHEDRAL is giving it their all.
When the song "Society's Pact With Satan" comes near the end, the interaction between pure Doom and Heavy Stoner Metal becomes more intense, before ending with the same eerie and haunting sounds that start off this whole epos. What I am most impressed about is the fact that you simply don't realise that this has taken half an hour. It increases your appreciation and awe for how good a band CATHEDRAL used to be. On this EP you hear all the elements that were needed to make CATHEDRAL into the band they were. It's all properly and expertly put together in just one song. If this is their last hoorah, then the band couldn't have gone out in a better way than with "Society's Pact With Satan".
