Cannula - Confined by the Chains of the Subconscious Mind album cover

I. Love. Metal. Drummers. They have got to be a group of the most Talented, Patient, Hardworking, Energetic, and Indomitable people on the planet. They pour their whole body and soul into their music only to be regularly ignored and watch all the chicks go home with the vocalists and guitar players. Well, I got you guys. Bass players, even I cannot help you.

Ever wonder what happens when a bunch of drummers get together and start a Hardcore band? Well, neither had I. But it turned out to be one of those things I didn't know I needed in my life until I discovered it. One of those things that you wonder how you ever lived without it, like AFTER THE BURIAL. Was there even Music before Trent Hafdahl? I do not believe there was. And here we have another such instance. You're going to wonder how you ever lived before CANNULA.

As the album opens, we hear what sounds like a hospital room. Are we in a coma? Well, if the music that begins is a dream, please do not wake me because this is everything I love in my music. It has all that frustration, anger, darkness, and brutality that every Metalhead stirs into their coffee every morning.

"Now I Understand Why You Left" will have any of us thinking about an ex and wearing a deep frown. But also nodding along and cranking up the volume. These guys crush every note. The guitars are energetic and brutal, the bass is heavy, and the drums are perfectly wild. This track is perfection. I'm already in love. Something that really irritates me, however, is when I'm riding through an energetic album and all of a sudden there's a dang ballad or something that totally kills my energy. Man, why you got to kill my vibe like that? If I wanted low and slow, I'd listen to KATATONIA. I want you to grind my face off via my ear holes with your instruments. Now get to it. CANNULA obviously know what I mean because "Sheltered by the Trees" started to piss me off for a second, but the guys made up for it by being total badasses. So, it's okay.

Overall, this album is amazing. Every track is in your face, energetic, and brutal. I'm glad this album came across my desk because I'm definitely a fan now. I'm looking forward to hearing what CANNULA has in store for us in the future.
