The Sins Of Mankind (Reissue)

Last up on the spree of CANCER reemergences is "The Sins of Mankind", the third of their first three albums. This may well be the band's "Heartwork" moment in their career, featuring a peak in the music's production quality and its execution. From beginning to end, it comes off as one of the era's better extreme metal outputs.
"Cloak of Darkness" is a dirty, twisted first introspection into the work on display. Aggressive and ultimately poignant, the riff work is cutting-edge, present with a newfound crunch that resounds with each note struck. It expresses a remarkably spastic progression through the arrangement; the listener is surely not going to find a boring beginning to the album. "Electro-Convulsive Therapy" expresses the band's Thrashy tendencies, for a further sped-up, even more chaotic spin on their heavy-weight, jackhammer brand of Death. Thrown in here and there are some hints at an amorphous groove, helplessly shapeless amongst the unforgiving unpredictability of the track's highly varying tempos.
"Pasture of Delights / At the End" is delightful for about 45 seconds; eluded by a wistful and atmospheric, acoustic intro. I don't know about anyone else, but I found this to be the best track on the record, chock-full of seething, killer riffage from beginning to end, with many nods toward DEATH here and there. Perhaps containing some of the best riffs the band has written. Part 1 of "Tribal Bloodshed" has a weight of multiple Earth gravities behind it; just under 3 minutes of solid, earth crunching Thrash. "Part 2" is the longest track on the record, taking a relatively mature approach to the songwriting and the complexity of the arrangements, allowing for many Progressive sensibilities.
Sufficed to say, the three 'new' albums from CANCER are must-haves; if a rerelease instils that realization, then so be it. Perhaps we can look forward to future CARCASS material uttering from the studio.
