Brant Bjork - Bougainvillea Suite album cover

BRANT BJORK is a multi-instrumentalist who has worked in the Desert Rock scene for over three decades. Originally one of the founding members of KYUSS, he has performed with a number of bands since then, including a few variations of self-titled bands. On Bougainvillea Suite, he enlists help from Ryan Güt for keyboards, but plays everything else himself. This latest album was released on October 28, 2022, via Heavy Psych Records. BRANT BJORK crosses over into Stoner Rock frequently, using a slow, methodical pace to get from point A to B. "Trip On The Wine" is a great example of this. It leans heavier on the keyboards and stays quite psychedelic throughout. The percussion is used to accentuate and punctuate certain phrases. The guitar riff is less prominent than the keys on this track, though there is a melodic solo that does step forward to get noticed.

"Good Bones" still has prominent keys, but the guitar stands out a bit more on this one. The keys are used much like the percussion in the last song, showing an ability to change the focus in each composition while maintaining a consistent style. "So They Say" has a distinct DOORS vibe to it. Even the lyrics are a bit more eclectic, very much in the vein of Jim Morrison. For a bit more of a Stoner Rock influenced track, "Ya Dig" is a bit of slang and a bit of counter-culture wrapped into one song. The pace and tone are straight-up Stoner/Desert Rock. This is probably the most "stereotypical" song on the record, fitting the mold of the genre better than most as a whole.

The most interesting track on the album, in my opinion, is "Who Do You Love." Originally written and recorded by Bo Diddley in 1956, it was covered by the likes of ERIC CLAPTON, THE DOORS, and GEORGE THOROGOOD between 1970 and 1997. There have been many others as well, each bringing their own vision to the classic track. There is a distinct blues feel to some of these covers, including this one, but that is no surprise as Desert/Stoner Rock share some qualities with the Blues.

Ultimately, BRANT BJORK is a Desert Rock mainstay, but his influence is felt across many genres thanks to some of his past work, much of which is still present today. With 40 albums to his credit as either a musician or producer, plus another 15 collaborations, it is impossible to not inspire and influence others as much as those before inspired him. If you like Desert Rock with Stoner and Blues influences scattered throughout, you'll love this.
