Boulevard - What's Up album cover

In 1987, singer Roy El Hoshy, guitarists Lennart Widegren and Dick Börtner, bassist Mikael Magnusson and drummer Morgan Pettersson released their first single with BOULEVARD, hailing from Gothenburg Sweden, "One The Line - Still On The Way". In the same year, their debut album "What's Up" saw the light of day before the previous single was re-issued with a new, improved artwork in 1988. Unfortunately, these releases did not bring the band up to the next level. Finally, as so many other promising newcomers, BOULEVARD split up. Roy, Lennart and Morgan started the project "Midnight Blue" and released a single. Morgan Pettersson joined GLANZIG, a DANZIG tribute band. Dick and Lennart founded the group "Time Bomb Boys" which later was re-named into "The Ungrateful". Additionally to this, Dick "Dixxi" Börtner played with INNOCENT ROSIE and the THIN LIZZY tribute band called NIGHT LIFE. Morgan later joined the group B-THONG. Lennart Widegren left Sweden and moved to Los Angeles where he was working as guitar teacher and became a member of the group "Elegantly Wasted". Mikael Magnusson played with EASY ACTION. Much too early, he most recently has passed away.

Here we are then, another obscure AOR album from 1987 that has been exhumed for your delectation by those bloodhounds at Yesterrock. The record label had no apparent interest in pushing the band and despite the release of a string of singles the album never took off. Songs like "Still On My Way" (especially the demo version included here), "Solid As A Rock", "Fallen Angel" and "Surrender" have plenty of grunt with edges softened by an unobtrusive keyboard. The poppy groove of "Running" and "I'm What You Need" could actually bring the party to you. The production could be better but at least the album does not sound as dated as some that have been released recently. Compared to a lot of stuff that did get a bit more recognition back in the day, this album should have seen BOULEVARD create waves beyond the meager recognition they eventually achieved.

This album is only for lovers of 90's Metal...
