From Ashes

Bogwife

“From Ashes” is a solid return . . . from the ashes for BOGWIFE. Part Doom rocker, part blues jam, the album hits multiple sweet spots.

From the first riff they had me. BOGWIFE, that is, the Psych Stoner/Doom foursome out of Aalborg, Denmark. And that's the way it is with bog wives—part Sasquatch, part witch—one encounter and you're done. Take that as a warning. On November 7, 2025, BOGWIFE releases their third full-length album, From Ashes, on Majestic Mountain Records.

Apparently, there are plenty of bogs in Denmark. Bjaeldskovdal, for instance, is where they discovered the Tollund Man. Joshua Levine, a writer for Smithsonian magazine, described Denmark bogs as "Half earth, half water and open to the heavens, they were borderlands to the beyond."  That really captures the essence of it. And if you want to put that vibe to music, BOGWIFE would be a good choice.

It's been about four years since we last heard from BOGWIFE. With a new lineup—Michael Nielson replacing Morten Nielsen on guitar—the band gets way bluesy with dark inflections of Doom and fuzzy accents of Psych. Thematically, as the title suggests, the album seems to be about rebirth. Tracks like "From Ashes," "Light of Day" and "Chrysalis" all speak of a phoenix-like rising from a past ladened with "Shivering," "Heavy Burden Blues," and "Agony."

The album breaks out of the gates with the title-track, "From Ashes." Energetic, melodic riffs coupled with clean, high tenor vocals fuel the first half of track which then veers off on an exploratory jaunt adding something of a jam element to the mix. Next up is "Shivering," a Doom-infused track which takes on the gravitational pull of a blackhole about half-way through. So, two tracks in and the trajectory is all Stoner/Doom and then "No Church" happens and we go deep into blues territory. This is one of my favorite tracks on the album. It's visceral, soaked with raw emotion and Iverson's drum work is just sublime.

As we get to mid-album, we ratchet back into Stoner Psych zone with "Light of Day." Another standout track, this one. "Heavy Burden Blues" delivers exactly what it promises—down-tuned, swampy blues—and "Ages" is a solid rocker with a tricked-out break at the 1:45 mark reminiscent of CLUTCH's "Burning Beard." Bringing up the penultimate spot is "Agony," a dark, mean number. Closing the album is "Chrysalis," which clocks in north of seven minutes. This track starts off slow and trippy before wading deep into the bog with tidal doom riffs. Here the band sifts and probes and you realize too late there's no escaping this swamp. The track drifts into a long, long fade. The BOGWIFE prevails.

All in all, From Ashes is a solid return . . . from the ashes for BOGWIFE. Part Doom rocker, part blues jam, the album hits multiple sweet spots. Stoner, Doom, Heavy Psych, and even Heavy Blues fans will enjoy this one.
