Legions Of Metal

It always is a real treat when you get to review a release by BLUTGOTT. The reason of that being that you get three albums for the price of one. That does sound strange, but there is always a BLUTGOTT album that is pure Heavy metal in all it’s facets, but you also get a BLOOD GOD and a DEBAUCHERY album.

It always is a real treat when you get to review a release by BLUTGOTT. The reason of that being that you get three albums for the price of one. That does sound strange, but there is always a BLUTGOTT album that is pure Heavy metal in all it’s facets, but you also get a BLOOD GOD (a literal translation from German), which is more like an AC/DC album that was made in conjunction with ACCEPT, and a DEBAUCHERY album, which usually hoses the same songs as the BLOOD GOD one, just with Death Metal lyrics. So, yes, instead of 38 minutes per album you get over 112 minutes to listen to and try and make sense of. On top of that you just have to guess who the band members are. You only know the name of the main man, which is Thomas Gurrath.

CD1 of “Legions Of Metal” is filled with a full mix of BLUTGOTT madness, plus some absolute legends joining the ride: Tim "Ripper" Owens (former singer of JUDAS PRIEST), and Michelle Darkness (the voice of END OF GREEN). The track listing on this one is different then on the other two, as this one is some pure Heavy metal songs, and a number of songs that come from the other two albums. Let’s put it this way; the first three songs on the BLUTGOTT album are not to be found on the other two albums and are good enough to almost justify the purchase of that album by itself. Especially the anthem of just over six minutes that is the opening song “Demonslayer” will have you jumping for joy.

CD2 of “Legions Of Metal” is a real and bonafide Classic Heavy Metal and Hard Rock album, with the music being heavily reliant AC/DC rhythms and sounds, topped with a singer that has a lot of Brian Johnson in him and some Udo Dirkschneider, making him a powerful addition to the sound. The songs might be very recognisable, but I have to admit that they are all quite good as well. I really like this BLOOD GOD version of the band.

CD3 of “Legions Of Metal” is the version with the DEBAUCHERY monster voice. Death metal growls that sound like a demon gargling lava. Well, that is what the EPK says, but to me this is just an album with a heavy AC/DC musical underground with some decent but rather clean and distinguishable Death Metal vocals on top. It sounds good, but it just doesn’t grab me as much as the BLOOD GOD one does, as the music is just too much Heavy Rock and not enough Death Metal to justify the voice used, resulting in a slightly lower rating. If you wish to find out about BLUTGOTT, BLOOD GOD and DEBAUCHERY on their latest adventure; “Legions Of Metal” is available as a 3CD digipack and the main album as a limited edition picture LP.
