Five piece Vancouver Metalcore band BLOOD OF THE PHOENIX is coming in hard with their debut EP "From What We Used To Know". It immediately reminds me of early 2000s Post Hardcore like The Used and Billy Talent. The raw energy of the Punkish drums and distorted guitar combined with harsh vocals had me feeling very nostalgic. From the band's BandCamp - 'We explore many facets of life in this EP, writing these songs literally "From What We Used To Know". It's about loss in many different varieties, finding out who you are again.' This also relates to the band name, the Phoenix being the mythological creature that rises from the ashes to start anew.

The first track comes in hard and fast, with high energy throughout. Jess Escobar displays her vocal range, changing between mellow and harsh singing, showing a talent for both. The drums lacked inspiration, it felt very formulaic which took away from the song for me. "Searching For A Destination" is my favourite track of the three. I love the chaotic build-up and how the energy is maintained afterwards. It has a very heavy hitting breakdown that you cannot help but headbang to, certainly the highlight of the EP for me.

Overall, "From What We Used To Know" is a solid debut release for the band. It lacked creativity and the production value was disappointing. I didn't think it added anything new to the scene but is an enjoyable listen nonetheless.
