Bloodlines

Black .44

Although this was a simple sound, it had enough ummph and energy to it, you can’t help but like it and get caught up in some of the aggression and melodies. Not all music has to be overly complicated.

BLACK .44 is a Stoner Metal band from Finland, formed in 2011. They released their debut album in 2015, and then a long hiatus followed. They are back now, 10 years later, with their sophomore release. It has nine songs, and “Intolerance” is first. It has a raucous energy to go along with the semi-harsh vocals, and although the music is relatively straightforward and simple, it is still very effective, and the riffs are infectious as well as brutal. “The Kingdom” has some catchy tones and even some clean vocals to go along with the sludgy filth of their sound, and although your feel are stuck in the mud, you will be singing along.

“Again” is fuzzy, and even psychedelic at times and the main riff pounds in your head while the drums beat you into submission. The clean vocals however are quite somber and melancholy, and the contrast is stark. “The Motherfucker Song” is about what you might expect from the title…a no-holds barred rump through a wall of fists. It an anthem of sorts against the “man” when they say, “the motherfucker is always trying to push us down.” “Vril” has a slow riff that could conquer any man, if given enough time. The tones are more even-keeled but will still put a foot in your ass, and the old school keyboards you can file under “a pleasant surprise.”

“Will the Real Jesus Christ Please Stand Up?” rumbles forward with a fuzzy riff, old school keyboards, and filthy vocals. It also has a swing to it that will get your foot tapping or your head moving. “Angst” is a song full of just that…a steadfast somber feeling descends on the song. But is also has a bite, and begs you to reach out with your fingers. “Aftermath” is the final song, and it’s a fitting closer, ending things on a curious and introspective note. Overall, although this was a simple sound, it had enough ummph and energy to it, you can’t help but like it and get caught up in some of the aggression and melodies. Not all music has to be overly complicated.
