Beneath A Steel Sky
From Bandcamp, the band self-describes as “a retro futurist noir post metal/rock type noise from Scotland. That was all the information I was able to find about the band. The album has seven songs, and “The sky above the port was the colour of television, tuned to a dead channel” is first. The opening tones are very somber, clean guitars which sound to me as if they are gently weeping. Combined with the backing atmosphere, it creates an emotional and melancholic listening experience. “Vanguard” combines the pensive qualities of Post Rock with the fervor of Metal, especially considering the change from clean to harsh vocals and back again.
“Everyone you’ve ever known” embraces a simpler sense of melody with that opening sequence. They are a bit misty but thick enough to grab a hold of. The clean vocal harmonies are ethereal, but the harsh vocals are hardened. “Quetzalcoatlus” has more smooth, somber clean vocal harmonies, and a sense of unending grey skies, as if it has been raining for weeks, even months. “The infinite silence that follows the absolute truth” also opens with a few sober guitar notes. As layers are added, it builds the burden already heavy on your back. The longer it plays, the deeper the pain feels, and the harsh vocals accentuate that feeling.
“Cyclical dunt” has a combination of smooth, easy musical tones with the harsh bite of Death vocals in the background, the juxtaposition that the band has built thus far seems to be best represented in this song. “The becoming” closes the album, and both the clean guitars and vocals keep the song even-keeled but with a heavy emotional burden. They draw out the tones until you actually go numb from the pain. This was an excellent album, that combined the artistry of Post Rock with the fervent bite of Metal. The clean tones made your sense of emotions heightened, while the harsh tones remind you of how often the world can kick your ass.
