Atlantic Ridge
Atlantic Ridge

From Bandcamp, "The self-titled album by ATLANTIC RIDGE is an exploration of remote lands and forgotten geographies, on the thin border between reality and myth. Blending elements of atmospheric black metal and funeral doom metal passages, the record evokes alternatively rich atmospheres and desolate soundscapes. Across its tracks, "Atlantic Ridge" describes incredible places, surrounded by a sense of mystery, like a utopian journey through time and space. Music-wise, highly atmospheric black metal riffs collide with violent yet melodic slowdowns, framed by a constant sense of awe and detachment. Recorded in Italy between 2019 and 2024, "Atlantic Ridge" represents both a physical and spiritual journey: a descent into the unknown, chasing the idea of reaching to the world's farthest edges."
The album has six songs, and "Leo Terram Propriam Protegat (South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands)" is first. It's a hulking three-minute song consisting of a slow pace, down-tuned guitars, and all the power that comes from the genre. "Our Faith Is Our Strength (Tristan da Cunha)" has the distinct energy and sound of Black Metal, especially from the fast-picked guitars. Power is formed, channeled, and subsequently unleashed, and the guttural vocals sound like they come from an ancient being. "Abandoned Buildings (Pyramiden, Svalbard)" kicks off with a steady pace of drumming and riffing, and filthy harsh vocals. You can hear the programming in the drums, and there are also some eerie leads every now and again. "Strange Paradise (Socotra, Yemen)" uses darkness as one of the main mediums of the sound, and it's done in hues of grey and black.
"The Non-Existent Island (Freezeland)" is the first song to begin with clean tones, and they are very solemn. From there however, it descends into the recesses of the earth as if it was retreating, laying in hiding, and waiting to return again. "Contemplating the Vastness of the Universe (The Gobi Desert, Mongolia)" is the final song, and it clocks in at 13 minutes. Consider the title when allowing this song to seep in slowly…it's a monumental task…some might even call it an exercise in futility. For the first few minutes, the song leaves you with only your thoughts. Next, it begins to roll with more sonority. The interesting part about the song is that it pushed tension as opposed to results…tension that never comes to fruition.
This wasn't a bad album per se, it just felt disjointed to me, and some of the songs ran together in terms of their sound. The drum programming you can just hear clearly, and it turned me off a bit. Credit the band for not following a tried and true blueprint for the genre, it was just a little off the mark for me.
