ASTRO LIZARD is a classic rock project founded by Khaled C., a multi-instrumentalist out of Saudi Arabia. On July 21, 2023, ASTRO LIZARD's debut album, "On A Blue Moon," was released to the world. Style-wise the project comes across as Prog/Psych Rock. The 11 tracks are characterized with groove-laden melodies, the heavy use of melodic synths, clean vocals, and cosmic space truckin' themes (accented by the stunning cover art by Cameron Burns, Captvart).

Keeping in mind this is a solo project and debut album, there seems to be a lot of experimentation going on. Khaled C. is at his best when he maintains sonic momentum. Standout tracks are "Between the Cracks" and "Whiptail." On these tracks, the high velocity music does the talking, with funky riffs and mean breaks. From my perspective, he isn't as successful with the slower tempo tracks, which make up most of the album. On a side note, if you're looking for a track where Middle Eastern musical influences seep in, it's "See You in the Ether."

Thematically, the album is rendered through the eyes of the figure Astro Lizard (reminiscent of BUDGIE's avatar) as he explores earthly themes through the lens of time and space, "where space is portrayed as the frontier to seek refuge in, away from the trouble, heartache and disappointment we experience on earth." Ultimately, it's an uplifting album focusing more on the positive side of life. Even when examining relationship troubles, he does so with an optimism of moving on and not letting the negative gravity hold him down.

While the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is rich in culture, historically it has also been fairly insular. As the country begins to open more and more to tourism, Saudi creatives are also beginning to share their artistic endeavors externally to the world. Khaled C., like his Astro Lizard character, is venturing into this unexplored territory, leading with his heart, and letting music be his guide.
