ASSORTED HEAP was a Death/Thrash Metal band formed in Germany in 1987. The band has been split up since 1992. This is a re-issue of the debut album, and contains nine tracks. "Unexpiated Bloodshed" is the opening song. From the start, you can hear some of the production challenges that came with bands in the genre and timeframe. The fast pace and changing riffs keep the sound pretty firm in the Thrash genre for me, but the vocals are a little more evenly distributed between the two. "Experience of Horror" is the title track. Once again the chords are rooted in the minor key, giving it that dark sound. It's a little while before the vocals come into play, and if it wasn't for the music, the shouted rhythm of them reminds me of something you would hear in the Hardcore genre. The interlude near the half way mark provides some diversity in sound, which I always enjoy.

"In Vain" is a nice acoustic-led number that breaks up the violence of the album well, and leads into the heavy charged "Sold Out Souls." The rhythm is interesting here. At times it sound like there might be phasing issues, or just an unconventional way of merging the mid-section. "Trick to your Mind" is the longest song on the album, at nearly seven minutes. Using the low E chord as the base for the riff, the rhythm and lead guitars can dance above it which makes for a good use of layering. The chorus sections are longer as well. "Terrorized Brains" is the first song that features some effects in the background and supportive acoustic guitars with growls and screams. The pace is slow at first to build some suspense but soon turns fast. "Grave New World" is the final song with lyrics. Blast beat drums drive a lot of the sound here. Rhythmically the vocals are again done in an almost spoken format, like some of the early merging in the Rap and Metal world of the late 1980's.

"Frisia non cantat" is comedic relief for the end of the album; a short jovial song sung in native German. Overall the sound on the album is about exactly what one would expect of the genre for the time period. Thrash had been very well established at this time but Death was still really just emerging for the most part. I don't find however that this album fits neatly into either category, as the vocal style is akin to the Hardcore genre. It also left me with a shoulder shrug overall; just so-so with some memorable moments but overall not great.
