Ascend the Helix - Spiral of Reflection album cover

The only information I could gather on the band is that they are a new Progressive/Djent/Core Mashup from San Diego, CA, USA. This new album has eleven songs, and "Wake" is the first. Out of the gates, it has a bitter and harsh flavor of burnt coffee and dark chocolate in its structure, but the ethereal vocals, spacy background, and keyboards give the flavor some bright notes of fruit and florals. The bottom end of this song seems to have no floor. "Born of the Light" has weighted rhythmic accents and harsh vocals, but the cleans cut through them with grace. I get a distinct VEIL OF MAYA vibe here.

"Reverie" has more of that spacey sound, like you are searching the outer recesses of the universe. The rhythm guitars, bass, and drums hold down the lower end while the vocals scream above it. The clean vocals bring more of a dreamy sound to an otherwise brutal song. "A New Doorway" has a sound that can best be described as a seral killer strolling through the park making a mental note of how and who he will kill when he returns after the sun goes down. He is calculated and prepared. The heavy chugs represent his footsteps, and when you see him, it's too late to run. "Herald of Deceit" has some very rich clean vocals to go along with the weighted accents and screams. The anger rises at times and remains a constant force in the song.

"Cocytus" is the river of wailing in the underworld in Greek mythology. The mysticism of the song is strong, leading in slowly to MESHUGGAH like chugging, and there is a tinge of Industrial elements, especially in the vocals. "The Callous Soul Within" has an angry bite to it that bubbles and lashes out at time equally. Though some of the anger stays subdued, it also burns white hot. "Insatiable" has some more free flowing rhythms and the song breathes a little better. It's a good thing too, because the intensity of the album is so strong. The rhythms in this song are also complicated and would seem that the band are part mathematicians as well...I mean, they would have to be at this level. "Transcendence" is a lengthy nine minutes. Time seems to stand still, but by the end, you have become someone else...someone stronger, and more perceptive.

The title track closes the album, and it's all about building atmosphere. Lead guitar breaks fuel the eerie sound, which is both weighted and weightless at the same time. The heaviness of the album is offset by these sparkles of matter that are hard to describe. I can't help it...the entire album reminds me of a trippy journey through space, which remains largely untouched, at least, that is our perspective on our tiny little planet. Perhaps it's the backing elements that lead me to think this way, but as a person who has a deep fear of wide open spaces, it both frightens and intrigues me at the same time. That's what good music makes you do...it makes you think of possibilities that never entered your mind before, and that's what "Spiral of Reflection" did for me.
