APOSTLE OF SOLITUDE is a doom metal band from Indianapolis, Indiana. They formed in 2004 and "Until The Darkness Goes," is their fifth full length album. They have also released two demos, two splits and an EP. I tried many, many times to get into this album. Despite that it failed to peak my interests, the album does check off all the boxes for what I want in this style of doom: heavy riffs, pounding bass, solid drums and decent vocals. So what's my problem with the album, then? Honestly, I just found it boring. Perhaps the problem is the checking of the boxes is that it stops there. Yes, the guitars are heavy but they aren't playing anything that kept my interests.  The drums provide a serviceable rhythm section but they don't go above and beyond.   I'd argue that the bass is the best part of this album: loud, thick, and heavy.  It does contain the "oomph" I am looking for in the guitars.  The vocals are done well but lack any real power or enthusiasm.

In essence, there were few moments where I told myself, "I want to hear that again!" Or "Wow, that was a really cool part." It isn't a terrible album though and it does have a few bright spots, one of which is the length. With six tracks and a thirty six minute run time, it is my thankfully short. Honesty, I couldn't listen to this a minute longer. The songs tend to tread water early on-another issue with the band's sound.  I think the band recognizes this too-based on my research, this is their shortest album yet.  Even still, every song feels twice as long as it is and the album drags on-not a good sign for such a short album.

The songs can be catchy, at times. The opening track "When The Darkness Comes," has a memorable chorus but its the only part of the song that is. Around the 2:21 mark, the structure becomes clean and minimalist-it breaks up the monotony of the guitars and the riffs that go no where.  The atmosphere is handled better when the songs take a melodic route such as in the beginning of "Apathy In Isolation." The title unfortunately holds true in the other parts because the whole band sounds bored as hell.  For the title track, I expected much, much more.

The last track, "Relive The Day," ends the album on a whimper instead of a bang-the song just doesn't have any bite to it or. The song is just six and a half minutes but it feels twice as long. As I said previously, this isn't a bad album but it is boring and there just isn't enough passion or fire to the songs to bring me back-too much of playing it safe, for my tastes.
