ANGMAER is a Extreme/Melodic Black Metal project which was formed in 2013 as a solo project of Oscar Taylor. Since then a full line up has been formed in late 2015 into a four piece onslaught, currently residing in London. "Victoria Aut Mors" is the band's latest release, and contains nine tracks. "Angel of Light" opens with impossible fast blast beat drumming and a quick moving riff. The vocals are high pitched screams but not the really high ones you often hear in the genre. The riff changes are highly dexterous moves amidst the chaos, but I am not getting much in the way of melody.

"Victoria Aut Mors" is a bit slower but still with very demanding drumming. It borders on Thrash Metal for me...the riff. The vocals are obviously Black Metal but the riffing pattern suggests otherwise. Towards the end, a nice ambient passage makes a quick appearance. "Into Eternity" is a slower moving track with some heavy and aggressive moments, and I would say more traditional Black Metal sounds. Just before the half way mark, the riff changes and takes on a marching sound. Another more ambient passage sneaks in but is soon replaced by the chaos.

"As the Rivers Flow with Blood" opens with a furious pace of drums and guitars. It halts to a slower grind of an amalgam of Black Metal and Thrash Metal. The intensity never lets up, but the riff changes several times throughout. It slows to feature a nice passage of ambient acoustical guitars and some melody, and then it comes back, angrier than ever. "Flight of Muninn" has a slow entrance that leads to some chaotic drumming and guitars. It settles into a pattern of Extreme Metal that is absolutely punishing.

"Slaying the Bastard Son" features some really spectacular drum work by Arjun Gupta. The stamina the man possesses must be superhuman. The music however is really nothing special at all. "Bringer of Eternal Fire" opens with that depressive Black Metal sound that turns into a display of pure might and power. The riff changes in what would be a chorus, which you don't often hear in the genre. "Summoner" opens with clean guitars and a welcome change of pace. Following a somewhat chaotic passage, an ambient passage with doomy guitars comes into play. It slows to a near halt before returning with renewed energy.

"Transcending II" closes the album, opening with a bit of melody in that lead guitar passage. It is a nice instrumental and a nice break from all of the chaos. When they put their mind to it, it's obvious they are capable of melodic moments, but unfortunately they were too few and far between on the album. It was just too much of the same thing for me...a relentless pounding that left my head with scars. They do however have a stand out drummer and a passion for what they do...you can tell that. But in the end, too homogenous for me.
