Alicate - Free Falling album cover

ALICATE is band hailing from Perstorp, Sweden and has been playing a melodic type of Hard Rock, emerged in 1985 by singer / guitarist Jonas Erixon & bassist Fredrik Ekberg. ALICATE released a single in 1989. Since then the band has toured in Sweden and Finland and been the support band for Ian Gillan on his "Toolbox Tour" back in 1992. Afterwards, the band broke up only to reform in 2006. "World of Anger" was their debut in 2009 and after years of waiting, they release "Free Falling".

Opening the album, the song "Still Standing" is the sort of prologue for what is about to musically occur, true hard rock sounds with flavour of keys and a roughened voice. "When Night Falls" is a sweet ballad measuring up to the AOR oriented specials of the 80s, highly impressive. "I Believe" illuminates the strapping riffery and Blues dedication of JORN and WHITESNAKE, beautiful guitar solo and a veil of vocals. "Make A Wish" is another strong track yet with quite an astounding halo of keyboards, very catchy and welcoming. "Wake Me Up" turned out to be a bit different with symphonic elements, ounces of melodies and an electric Hammond like keyboards that reminded me of early WHITESNAKE, BLACK SABBATH and DEEP PURPLE. Furthermore, there was a feeling of Progressive Rock in the mix. "Forevermore" portrays another 80s Hard Rock sensation in the manner of WHITESNAKE, especially the riffing and lyrical themes. Jonas Erixon has a great voice, melodic, heavy and nice singing with similarities to David Coverdale (WHITESNAKE) and Jorn Lande (JORN / ex-MASTERPLAN). "Carpe Diem" is the catchiest of the album, tremendous vocal display no doubt. "Free Dalling" has a fairly unbelievable chorus with plenty of energetic singing with backup vocals, great climatic keys, easy livin' drums, so easy and memorable, Rockstar material. Also worth to listen are the vigorous "Out Of Bounds" and catchy "Can't Change It" played with melodic 80s pattern.

ALICATE's style of Rock measures in an AOR mix with Hard Rock, sharing influences of MAGNUM (UK), WHITESNAKE and TREAT. The album was produced with finesse and it shows the members' experience. The band's music is a bit traditional, which is fine, but has a knack of being something more. After each listening session, my overwhelming became greater, anyone who enjoyed the sounds of Hard Rock and AOR, will get the drift of this album.
