Gamma II

Alfa Pentatonik

This was a solid EP. Through five songs, they band presents a firm weight with the music and vocals, but also some playful electronics. The album is well balanced in that regard. My interest in the band was piqued through five cuts, and I look forward to hearing a long play from here.

Hailing from Finland and formed in 2002, the band underwent a major overhaul in 2007, and have been silent ever since. “Gamma” consists of two EPs, and the second one is here for review. The album has five songs, and “Lisäajalla” is first. It begins with a dose of electronic, and segues into a dark, hardened riff.  The vocals are cold, and sterile, and the entire song has harrowing sounds. Sung in native Finnish, the vocal angles are sharp. “Tuomiopäivän tanssi” begins with spoken words (are they Chinese?), and then in comes the heavy electronics, accompanied by a study riff. There is also just a smidge of melody, but in this genre, those moments are few and far between.

“Kone yskii” begins with a particular cadence in the vocals, and some light, even jovial at times, keyboard work. Although the song is still firm, and pushes a lot of melody, they seem to have a little more fun with this one. “Kuunnelkaa” is another one that has a good balance between a firm bottom end, and some more playful tones. However, the vocals are straight death. There are even some glittering lead breaks here among the madness. “Illuusio elämästä” is the final cut, and it features more electronic, but this song also has a jumpy, bouncy beat to it. The harsh vocals however when ushered in lay waste to any light melodies that are present.
