Dark Night of the Soul
After Earth

The only information I was able to find out about the band is a bio on Bandcamp that reads, "AFTER EARTH is a Swedish metal band created & based in Skövde in the fall of 2017. The new album presented here has eleven songs, and "The Lucent Sun" is first, following a brief intro piece. Although the sound is hard, there is plenty of melody to go with it. The vocals are guttural, and there are clean, ambient moments to go along with it. "Skinwalker" has faster and heavier tones, fueled by steady drumming and riffing. The song has a nice balance, tempering the aggression with guitar melodies and harmonies. "Dark Night of the Soul" begins with some backing choirs before the main sound hits. It's a fairly standard sound, not venturing too far to either side of the spectrum, and although it rocks, it doesn't offer much new to the genre.
"King from Within" is really the first song with some variation. Eerie leads introduce the song, followed by a thick groove of guitars, drums, and vocals. The bass parts are just a bit hard to hear however. "Serfitude" is a bit slower at first, but that signature sound of Melodic Death Metal is very much alive. The drums venture into blast beats at times, and the thick riff provides much of the fuel. They aren't setting any trends, but it's an honest sound. "The Queen Who Wept" is another aggressive song that is tempered with melody. Although it's genuine, I wish the band would take a few more chances. For example, the lead breaks bring some melody with them, and more of them might help the diversity on the album.
"'Til Daylight Dies" begins with piano notes, and this is exactly what I am talking about…diversify the sound just enough without giving into its core. The slow, somber melodies bring a lot to the table, and it swells to a crescendo of a balanced song. "From the Ashes" closes the album, and it's the longest song. It begins with a weighted, regal sound, that the band just lays on and grinds out. Once it gets going, it is a fireball of energy, and I love the direction that the band is taking on these final two songs. This one has the perfect combination of melody and weight. For me, the album's fairly straightforward sound did diversify a bit towards the end, and the band showed they are not a one trick pony. Excellent musicians, their sound just needs a bit of experimentation and diversity to go from good to excellent.
