All the way from Finland come ACHIOTE, a band that combines Melodic Metal and Grunge. The style and the genre of the band is something that reminds me a bit of NIRVANA in their early album "Bleach", although they take the genre to a new extreme & heavy level.
The band comes from Turku, Finland and enjoying their influences from the 70's-80's that combining some hybrid elements from the modern age. The album opens up with "Confessions", a kick ass melodic song with a guitar riff that maybe reminds me a lot of riffs that a lot of bands did, but the band uses him in a new and great way.
The main element that I recognize from the band is that they very much like to do things in a radical way, something that usually those modern bands such as SYSTEM OF A DOWN uses, but instead using those elements on Nu Metal or of Alternative, this band do those things more on melodic and classic oldschool Metal. It's something that reminds me of BLACK LABEL SOCIETY a little bit.
The next track is "Against The Time" which is much less modern and give us a big taste of Power Metal."Rhyme of the Hatter" comes across as inferior; the band trying to be more and more oldschool and in this one they even touch Country songs. Nice idea, but the way that they do it is just very confusing and just isn't working. The electric guitar parts are clearly needing to be embellished by an acoustic guitar and the the convolution comes to be very confusing and just not good. But the biggest problem of this song is the lack of identity.
"Paint Away" has the same problem, the identity gets lost along the way and we just don't understand what the band tried to do in this song."Rush of Instincts" is the heaviest and the fastest song so far and making one very big improvement over the last two songs. The band are back and they doing the thing that I liked in the first two songs in the album. After that comes "Children of the Fall", a very dark song and also melodic. Although the song has some problems, like again the electric guitar that shows up in peculiar places, the song is very much alive. It's another proof that the band reminds of BLACK LABEL SOCIETY, without copying the band, especially in the mellow songs.
A nice debut album with some advantages and some disadvantages. The advantages are that the band has a very original style and they are not ashamed of them. In this style, the band do some great songs that mostly are very extreme and very innovative. But the problem is that the band's songs are getting lost in the way. They just lose their identity and this is how most of the songs become very confusing. The songs are good, the band just need a little more time to find themselves.
