Counting Seasons

Above Us The Waves

I like the sound that ABOVE US THE WAVES better than I do the tunes individually. I would even go so far as to say that if they were able to write outstanding sounds, they would be able to make a real go at musical stardom. Nevertheless, “Counting Seasons” is a very decent EP.

Metalcore is not my favourite musical genre, but I do like it from time to time. Plus, it is what ABOVE US THE WAVES is all about, the band that I'm about to review. According to their Bandcamp page they have been going for over 15 years and are a five-piece band from Kavala, Greece, blending Melodic Death Metal and Hardcore with raw energy and sharp lyricism. In those 15 years they have provided us with two albums, "Anchors Aweigh" from 2013 and "Rough On High Seas", which originates from 2018. Now, almost 8 years after their last release, they come back with a short EP, as "Counting Seasons" only clocks just over 14 minutes. That is a short span in which I will try to give you an inkling as to what ABOVE US THE WAVES brings us musically.

Before I do tell you, I have to admit that somehow, I really like what the band does on "Counting Seasons". They are a typical Metalcore band, but in retrospect I have to say that the description that is on their Bandcamp site is quite accurate. There are a lot of Melodic and Death Metal passages plus Hardcore parts interwoven into their songs, providing a wide range of variety within the four on offer. But ABOVE US THE WAVES is able to sound the same on all the tunes that make up the EP. What this does confirm is that these musicians have been working together for some time, because what I really hear is a bunch of instrumentalists that are well versed in making music as a unit. The vocals fit the bill perfectly as well.

As for the quality of the songs, they are all between okay and decent. I like the sound that ABOVE US THE WAVES better than I do the tunes individually. I would even go so far as to say that if they were able to write outstanding sounds, they would be able to make a real go at musical stardom. I know "Counting Seasons" is just a short introduction for me into their music, and I do hear a band that I feel is able to get more out of themselves if they put the effort in. I really hope that I get the opportunity to experience that side of that ABOVE US THE WAVES one day. Until then I'll satisfy my curiosity by listening to "Counting Seasons", a very decent EP.
