A Pale Horse Named Death

A PALE HORSE NAMED DEATH is Gothic Doom Metal band from New York City. They formed in 2010 and have released three full length albums, including this year's "When The World Becomes Undone." Now they have released a short, two song covers EP. The aforementioned latest full length is an excellent album, but I didn't know what to expect before listening to this one. I don't mind the occasional cover, but the songs picked for left me somewhat confused. THREE DOG NIGHT's "One," is the first cover; beforehand, I wasn't sure how this song could even be turned into anything related to Metal. However, the band pulls it off pretty well.
So many covers are played just like the original, but A PALE HORSE NAMED DEATH definitely put their own spin and style to it. The heavy, Doom vocals work surprisingly well within context of the song as do Sal's gloomy, signature Gothic style vocals. The original version made the depressing subject matter seem not so, but you really feel the misery that can happen when you're alone in this new retelling.
The next song, "Prayers for Rain," is originally from THE CURE. I'm not much of a fan of that band but I'm familiar enough with their sound to know any cover from them by a Gothic Doom band should work perfectly. I am not familiar with this particular song but I did end up checking out so I could compare the two versions. A PALE HORSE... definitely keep the song's original atmosphere intact while, just like they did with "One," make the song all their own.
My promo copy came with a radio edit version of this song and is basically just a more condensed version of it, so I don't have anything of real importance to say about it. Giving a numbered review for a two song EP of covers seems a bit much but I'll go ahead and give it a six-the songs are good but with just two, there obviously isn't enough content to really bother with unless you're a die-hard fan of the band or the band's they covered.
