It was a relief to get into the already warm, intimate atmosphere of The Underworld from the cold surroundings outside as winter nears us. There is already a sense of togetherness as the metal heads that evening settled to get their first pint of the evening (or second if you sneaked in one before heading to The Underworld), browsing the merchandise that was on sale or greeting friends and acquaintances whether they were either expecting to see them or not.
First to show The Underworld what they were made of were Hard Rock outfit DYNAMITE who's blasting beats, huge riffs and impressive vocal work were enough to bring the venue down in one setting. This being grouped by their dominant stage presence and visible passion for what they do to keep their audiences at bay. This band even encouraged some hip shaking whilst purchasing a drink at the bar, if this isn't a solid reason why they should be the band on everyone's lips there is no knowing what will.
It was extremely evident London's Metal heads were eagerly awaiting the arrival of Stockholm based legends ENFORCER; whether they had been waiting to see the band for a while, seen them before or are completely new to their sound altogether their live show certainly gives you a reason to consider them a new favourite or a refresher as to why you started to listen to them in the first place. Their setlist consisted of an impressive selection of their material they have released throughout their time as a band. Even with the initial thought of front man Olof Wikstrand slightly resembling DAVID BOWIE's "Labyrinth" persona Jareth The Goblin King, which is a great compliment by the way. The room was filled with absolute happiness and togetherness which is what is admirable about the Metal community.
Co-headliners were Swedish brothers WOLF and to say they are storming the Metal scene would be a massive understatement; opening with their latest album "Devil Seed" commencing belting "Overture In C Shark" and "Shark Attack" was more than enough to get the metal heads of London swishing their glossy hair in sweeping head bangs, air punching and the all important singing along. With their eclectic set list consisting of a great selection across their discography from "The Bite" to one of their newish anthems "My Demon" showcased their undying talent and passion for their music and their fans. Everything from Niklas Stålvind's powerful vocal technique and glorious abs to Richard Holmgren providing the all important beats for their solid melodies there was great talent. It was an energy fuelled performance with lots of hair and smiles, particularly from bassist Anders Modd (a.k.a Worlds Happiest Bass Player). It also never gets old hearing anthem "Voodoo" live. They ended on a high with their anthem "Speed On".
This was a great experience of hip shaking, head banging, fist pumping and lots of hair; it was also refreshing to notice each of the bands just hanging out with their loyal fans before and after their show. Whether it was chatting over a pint, signing their merchandise or posing for photographs that sense of togetherness and community was there. This particular evening showed us some of Sweden's best Metal acts; keeping up their genuine reputation for the best music exports.
