Every once in a while, musicians famed for their technical prowess and virtuosity get together and create music so complex and inventive that their concerts aren't shows, so much as masterclasses in brilliance. Where most bands of this ilk- purporting to be Instrumental Jazz-Rock Fusion- run the risk of being ridiculous shred-fests and to hold themselves with a sense of reverence and complete solemn seriousness, THE ARISTOCRATS (Yes, there are a lot of fireworks on display) refuse to take themselves completely seriously. Between them guitarist Guthrie Govan, bassist Bryan Beller and drummer Marco Minnemann have toured, recorded and performed alongside some of the biggest names in music, from Joe Satriani to DEATHKLOK to Hans Zimmer to NECROPHAGIST.

The show at Brighton's The Haunt, was less a concert, more of a masterclass- each track was introduced with a story of where the inspiration for the composition came from, be it a concept based around fictional characters recurring from the first album ("Jack's Back"), stories about doing the wrong thing when tornadoes strike- aka getting in a car and trying to outrun it.. ("Desert Tornado"); or simply about the wearing out of a farmyard animal mascot who follows Guthrie Govan on the road ("Pig's Day Off").

What is evident in any piece of music from THE ARISTOCRATS' catalogue is the range of influences that the three musicians draw upon; Rock, Country, Jazz, pretty much anything.

Having performed with some of the biggest names in Rock, especially of the more technical side, these three know exactly how their audience is made up, and precisely what they want- 98% male, 2% girlfriends dragged along, and about 95% musicians. The crowd got exactly what they came for. The tracks were performed with a flawless perfection and grace which held everyone present transfixed in their musical spell.

One of the joys of witnessing a group like THE ARISTOCRATS live is their freedom for musical exploration. The format of their songs are used as a springboard for the whole trio to improvise at length and show what they can do. Whilst doing this, it was also possible to see the pure joy that these three get from playing this music together, not trying to show each other up, but intertwining musical lines and complimenting ideas while playing musical jokes and entertaining each other.

Overall this masterclass in musicianship and interplay between performers at the top of the scale was a true experience, and an incredible show. THE ARISTOCRATS are an incredible force, and definitely a show to check out!
