On April 11thI made my way down to the Manchester sound control for what would be another treat of three bands to which show different qualities and styles when it comes to their stage presence as well as sound and creativity, these three bands gave way to three different extremes and as such give the ticket buyer more then their moneys worth.
From the start of this all female Death/Doom band MORTALS we see a strong verse of energy and anger one from the band, and aggression to match the style and tone of this bands forceful and intense sound which by far shows that they have something special and something different about them. Now what makes this band special to my eye is the fact you don't see a lot of female Death/Doom bands with this kind of power, in any sense I would call them the Girl School of extreme metal as they have a very unique chemistry about them which just goes to show that when you see them live they bring it hard. In any case Mortals performed incredibly and gained a new fan in me, so really this is a band I would suggest checking out folks.
Now as anyone has seen I am a fan of GOATWHORE and have continued to support this band whenever I can, so its a no brainer that one of the main reasons I went to this show was to see this new Orleans power house in action once again. From the start of GOATWHORE set I can say it started off with a bang, with yours truly at the front for the whole thing and having my back used as a tackling post I can say it really started off well and truly violent as always which is something you want now in a show of this magnitude. As always the band brought their own style of vicious songs and chants to shed blood to featuring an array of songs of the latest record "Constricting Rage Of The Merciless" as well as material from "Carving out the Eyes of God" and "Blood Of The Master" which is a brutal combination of everything you need for a GOATWHORE show of this type... For the show itself it was hosted in the basement area of the sound control which can at some points be cramped but if your losing control and having a great time then this is the venue to do it in!
We now come to the final band of the evening: SKELETONWITCH. Since their last visit to the United Kingdom the band have made some changes with vocalist Chance Garnette with Andy Horn of CANNIBIS CORPSE. Now from the shows start it heads in the right direction, everything goes as it should and the band blasts out some powerful tunes to make the show start off the way it needs to, but I feel as the show progresses that there is something missing from the bands chemistry and it starts to look like the switch in singers was not really the way to go for this band as the previous vocalist had something which made this band work. I enjoy Andy Horn's style of singing but for this band I feel it doesn't work like before, the band is still enjoyable but the sound quality is one to be questioned to be very honest, besides this the effort the band put into the show made it well received.
