It was about six o'clock in the afternoon of May the 30th when three friends of mine and I arrived at Lycabettus (the small mountain in Athens where a lot of concerts take place every summer). Many people were already there waiting for the gates of the theatre to open. There were two hours until the opening of the gates and three and a half until the concert's initiation.
We stayed by the trees drinking beer and waited for time to pass by. After a few beers and a couple of walks among the people, the gates opened and we went into the theatre. There were thousands people, men and women, of all ages; about six thousand people in the theatre and another two thousand on the cliffs above the theatre.
About half past nine, when the lights went off, darkness covered Lycabettus and all the people started shouting rhythmical "Scorpions, Scorpions". Matthias Jabs came out of the darkness and onto the stage and all the people were screaming as he played the first notes of "New Generation", the first song of Scorpions' new album "Unbreakable". Then Rudolf Schenker, Pawel Macidowa (Scorpions' new bass player) got on stage (James Kottak was already behind his drum set) and the delirium took off. The moment Klaus Meine made his appearance, all the theatre started shaking just like an earthquake would shake it. The people's response was very good and they seemed to know the new songs of the band.
They played about 19 songs and some solos which I do not remember with the exact order that were been played, but more or less the set-list was the following:
New Generation / Love 'em Or Leave 'em / Bad Boys Running Wild / We'll Burn The Sky / The Zoo / Deep And Dark / Coast To Coast / Holiday / She Said / Through My Eyes / Remember The Good Times / Tease Me Please Me / Bass/ Drum solo / Blackout / Blood Too Hot / Matthias Solo guitar / Big City Nights / 1st encore: / Still Loving You / Wind Of Change / Rock You Like A Hurricane / 2nd encore: / When The Smoke Is Going Down
The band was full of energy. They wore poser clothes and they did not stop walking up and down the stage during the whole concert. Especially Rudolf Schenker and Matthias Jabs were super energetic and they incited the people to sing along with Klaus Meine all the time. Klaus' voice was good and he could ascribe the songs with no real problems, but we have to admit that he is getting old and so is his voice together with him. Pawel Maciwoda had no problems following the others on the songs and James Kottak made a great performance.
In the middle of the show Klaus, Rudolf, Matthias and Pawel left the stage and James did a very good drum solo. After him it was Pawel 's turn for a solo and a few songs later Matthias did a solo that I'm sure everyone still remembers.
"Holiday" was played with acoustic guitars (they played only the acoustic half of the song) and in "Tease Me Please Me", "The Zoo", "Bad Boys Running Wild", "Coast To Coast", "Blackout", "Big City Nights" and "Rock You Like A Hurricane" all the people were screaming and dancing as if they were drawing immense energy from the songs themselves. When they played "Wind Of Change" and "Still Loving You" the crowd sung with the band.
Finally, two hours after their first appearance on stage, Scorpions closed the concert with a song that everyone knows, "When The Smoke Is Going Down". It was a very good concert and the only bug in their performance was the fact that they played too many songs off the new album (they played seven songs from the new album: New Generation, Love 'em Or Leave 'em, Blood too Hot, She Said, Remember The Good Times, Deep And Dark and Through My Eyes). This resulted in neglecting their old albums. I think that they should play a little bit more from their previous albums. Anyway, it was a very good concert from a great band and I feel lucky that I saw them for the second time.
There's no one like them… and for this we'll all be expecting to see them again.
