It's was a cold and windy day in the city of lights Tel Aviv, when yet another
ProgStage Production live show was upon us, like many ProgStage production show it was a juggernaut show. You probably already know, however I will say it for the record, I'm talking about
Paul Di'Anno, the first and amazing
IRON MAIDEN vocalist. Let's talk some history:
Paul Di'Anno started has a Punk vocalist when he joined new founded band named
IRON MAIDEN, with him in the front seat
IRON MAIDEN recorded what many people consider the best albums by
IRON MAIDEN and maybe upon the greatest Metal album of all time; I'm referring to "
Iron Maiden" and the amazing "
Killers". History already discussed regarding the departure of
Paul Di'Anno out of
IRON MAIDEN and the arrival of
Bruce Dickinson, however to this humble servant the first two albums are a landmark, "
Killers" was the first album from
IRON MAIDEN I bought and it was always and will always be my favorite,
I will not discuss other landmarks of Paul Di'Anno as a lead vocalist, I want to talk mainly about the show; it's the second time Paul Di'Anno came to Israel and there was lots of anticipation regarding the arrival, the band that supported him is well known in Israel for being one of the best IRON MAIDEN cover band in the world, and I mean THE PROWLERS, it's only fitting that the best cover band will play with the amazing Paul Di'Anno.
The venue that was selected for this event was Riding 3, the same place that many other great bands played it before, like ICED EARTH, i will say that the selection of this venue was a mistake, Riding 3 does not have the intimate atmosphere that many other venues in Israel has and because that only 450 people come to see the show also impacted the atmosphere cause the place was only half full and there were many empty spots that didn't enhance the overall occasion .
Nevertheless the moment THE PROWLERS come up to the stage the place caught of on fire and the moment Paul Di'Anno came up to the stage the place exploded, however something seemed strange. It seemed that Paul Di'Anno had an issue standing up and then started the debate; to perform a good show a lead vocalist should be able to run and jump all over the place, the answer is in the end of this review; either way Paul Di'Anno sang and holy shit , he can sing believe me, his voice hasn't been damage over the years on the contrary it come to be even stronger, Paul Di'Anno and THE PROWLERS did a mix of all IRON MAIDEN classic tracks from the "Iron Maiden" and "Killers" albums seasoned with some Paul Di'Anno classic tracks from all eras like "The Beast Arises", many songs made the crowd go berserk , like "Killers" and "The Prowlers".
The show was long has anticipated, however after the immortal song "Running free" many fans thought that the show ended, however Paul Di'Anno surprised all with three consecutive covers; I explained before Paul Di'Anno come from the Punk scene, so it's was fitting that two of the covers were classic Punk song from back in the day: THE RAMONES' "Blitzkrieg Bop" and SEX PISTOLS' "Anarchy In UK", both covers were amazing with Paul Di'Anno's voice and charisma mesmerizing the crowd (on that time he chose to stand and sing and the pain was obvious in his eyes), the biggest surprise came with an amazing cover, the best one I have heard for the Immortal and classic song from JUDAS PRIEST "Breaking the Law" at this time the crowed was already pumped up and went crazy all around.
The most obvious thing about Paul Di'Anno was is engagement with the crowed, many bands and vocalist come and sing and only that, however Paul Di'Anno did talk and told many stories and I did find it to be very amusing, many of the songs give much information about Paul Di'Anno life and his relationship with Clive Burr (once a great IRON MAIDEN drummer) , i think that it's a refreshing act from a vocalist , however i do think he can swear less.
I can conclude that Paul Di'Anno sitting most of the times didn't damage the performance nor the charisma Paul Di'Anno showed, overall a great show by a great vocalist with a great band THE PROWLER , maybe I didn't say enough about them however I salute to this guys, giving a great performance with great sound and not shadowing Paul Di'Anno.
So, maybe it was a cold night but I was very warm in Riding 3, I would also say that ProgStage decision to do a 200 - 400 people show every month (at least they try), it's a great decision, it can show that we do have a Metal fanbase in Israel, maybe it will encourage ProgStage to bring some high caliber bands later , however i will say to the fans, come to the shows because only then we can show to bands all over the world that we are ready for the big bang of Metal and, again thanks to ProgStage.
