One of the most classic crust bands arrived in Athens for the first time and one big dream became reality. EXTREME NOISE TERROR's history started more than 20 years before with their debut split Radioactive along with CHAOS U.K. released in 1987 as one of the first and rawest punk recordings ever.
The gig started around 20:40 with FORMIKATION who climbed first upon the stage. The big surprise was the absence of a bass player so we had a trio with guitar, vocal, and drums only. They played a mix of a thousand influences from modern grind like NASUM and PIG DESTROYER to NEUROSIS and the madness of bands like MELVINS. Nice vocals from deep brutal 'till extreme incising metal ones with guitar parts that in the first followed the standard grinding riffing and the latter were closer to noise with a wall of insanity. Although they were not my cup of tea they were nice presenting some nice ideas. They also played a cover from DISCORDANCE AXIS.
Second band was PROGRESS OF INHUMANITY and like the previous they didn't have a bass player! Probably there was a serial killer of bass players somewhere around! They were more into grind type of music that reminded me a lot of prime and recent NAPALM DEATH's works. With low and screaming vocals and a guitar player that exploded tons of crushing riffs perfect for headbanging and moshing. The drumming was furious as hell full of blasts and the standard 'goupa-goupa-gapa' in the mid tempo moments. This was the first time that I saw them and they definitely won me. I am waiting for the future studio release.
It was also mentioned in the flyers that two more supporting acts would play instead of the previous ones, EXTREME VIOLENCE and MORTAL TORMENT but for unknown reasons to me they didn't. So, it was time for the deathsters DESECRATION from Wales. I had the Pathway To Deviance and Process Of Decay but it were complete deleted from my destroyed memory. That was bad. DESECRATION count many years in Brutal Death Metal, they are in the scene since 1992, and although their music is typical I must agree that their performance that night was a bloody holocaust and I'm sure they won some more fans. The ultimate low guitars were almost crawling upon the earth along with the brutal vocal assault from Ollie Jones together with an unstoppable bombardment created by Mic Hourihan (both of them in EXTREME NOISE TERROR) and a bulldozer bass with some guttural assault from Andi's stomach. They played some new tracks from their forthcoming album entitled Forensix and Ican recall that Overdose was killer. Bacterial Breakdown from Process Of Decay sounded ten times better than in studio and generally I was that surprised by their performance that after my return home I searched for their forgotten in my rusty selves albums. I'm glad that I had the luck of seeing them and you can check their new album that is out now. Extra bonus for their t-shirts with BOLT THROWER and AUTOPSY. AUTOPSY fotherfuckerz!!!
A few minutes after 23:00 it was time for EXTREME NOISE TERROR and the stage was transformed into a volcano that exploded madness and adrenaline. Now what to say, what to describe. Double vocal attack from Phil Vane who is back in the band and from the marsh throat of Dean Jones. They focused more in their past and not in their Death Metal era, making me more than happy. Think About It, Bullshit Propaganda, False Profit (aaarrrggghhh!!!), Show Us You Care made the crowd go frenzy and the pit into a moshing hell. Phonophobia's Third World Genocide were an ear pleasure through the astonishingly power of the band delivered from the stage. They also played some new songs from the Law Of Retaliation that will be out in the early of December raising my curiosity for this. They ended their almost 40 minutes set with a dedication with 'jewelery adjectives to a well - known singer of an American band that has a self-titled moshing song. Guess who? If Your Only In It For The Music was the best finale and although they played not an hour I felt complete exhausted with this mixture of heavy guitars, DISCHARGE riffing and maniacal screaming.
This was one great night for many reasons; I left the Texas Necropolis Club and the only thoughts inside my mind were when will be the next time that I will have the opportunity of seeing them again.
