Raise your hands to the sky and praise the Heavy Metal gods!!
The debut masterpiece, fittingly titled "I Am God" from the new band EXORCISM, may very well be the album of the decade! This powerful full-length LP will have many old school Rock Gods ready to "Stand Up and Shout", overjoyed that their messages have been preserved and their influences drawn upon once again. After years in the making, perfecting every note one by one and eventually feeling satisfied that the sound was true to form, EXORCISM have unleashed the beast. This is as good as Heavy Metal gets from what has to be one of the most talented bands on the planet. I got word of this release several months' back and after seeing the lineup, I knew this would be an incredible event. I counted down the days of the release of "I Am God" as if I was waiting for the birth of my first-born child. If you call yourself a Metalhead and are a fan of dark and heavy, powerful and haunting, then you MUST own this record.
Let me first introduce you to the band. Words cannot due justice to the talent at hand here but I'll give it my best shot. On vocals is a modern-day METAL GOD, Csaba Zvekan (RAVEN LORD, ZVEKAN, KILLING MACHINE). You can sense the presence of Ronnie James Dio in this guy's soul. From the phrasing of the lyrics to the powerful tone in his voice, you might visualize RJD singing these songs and raising his "HORNS" high. I challenge anyone to find a more talented set of pipes anywhere. One of the most talented guitarists in the world is Joe "Shreadlord" Stump (RAVEN LORD, REIGN OF TERROR, HOLYHELL) and he proves his merit on every song. If you haven't heard of him yet, you will. The "Shreadlord" is truly amazing on every track and his heavy, doom-groove riffing is masterful. His style of playing sounds like a mixture of Tony Iommi and Zakk Wylde. The bass playing of Lucia Manca (RAVEN LORD, SOLID VISION) is phenomenal on "I Am God". From start to finish, his sludgy power is front and center. Garry King (ACHILLEA, JEFF BECK, JOE LYNN TURNER) on drums rounds out this foursome and with the impressive resume and experience he brings to this band, does not overpower the music but ties it all together.
I strongly believe that "I Am God" is one of the most important Heavy Metal releases of the last decade. I say this with the fear that if an album this good can't attain greatness, all of the groundwork laid down by the founding fathers (BLACK SABBATH, OZZY, DIO, JUDAS PRIEST, etc..) may forever be left in ruins. Start to finish, there's 10 tracks of deep dark lyrics with a heavy dose of BLACK SABBATH meets DIO sound that will make you close your eyes and raise your metal horns to the sky. Although "Voodoo Jesus" is my favorite song on this incredible album and ranks high on my list of favorite metal songs of all time, the other 9 songs are equally as great and polished to perfection. It's puzzling to me why this classic Heavy Metal sound that once ruled the music industry has, in a sense, been abandoned and left for dead. Don't get me wrong, there are still bands around the world releasing the sounds of old, but rarely will you find a band with as much authenticity as EXORCISM possesses. They will leave you shaking your head and asking "where in the hell has that sound been all these years". The impact of EXORCISM to the state of Metal today should rival the impact Black Sabbath had on music in the early 70's.
With an abundance of bands trying to imitate "flavor of the month" styles of music that currently dominate the Heavy Metal genre, a huge hole has prevailed and there's a hunger for that old-school branded style that was once proclaimed revolutionary. Look no further; that void has been filled. "I Am God" is the album that should have all Metalheads breathing a collective sigh of relief and EXORCISM should be hailed as the savior. This powerful four piece band is lyrical and musical wizards and more than likely will leave a permanent mark on the Heavy Metal genre. I've waited years for an album that touches my soul like "Holy Diver" did in 1983 and "I Am God" is it. What an appropriate title.
The only problem I had with this album was turning it off.
