Painted Doll, the new rock band featuring the unlikely pairing of comedian / guitar shredder Dave Hill (Valley Lodge, HBO's Last Week Tonight with John Oliver theme) and heavy metal legend Chris Reifert (Autopsy, Death) will release its self-titled debut album on February 16 via Tee Pee Records. Recorded and mixed by Tom Beaujour at Nuthouse Recording in Hoboken, NJ, Painted Doll delivers an infectious blend of late 60's/early 70's Dutch and British psych pop and garage rock. In advance of the record's release, Metal Injection debuts the new song "Dressing Room", adding, "the project is neither death metal nor hilarious. Painted Doll came to life when "a death metal guy and a power pop guy got hammered together at a Goblin concert in Texas." Soon after, Reifert and Hill began trying to out-deep cut each other with obscure psych records before Chris suggested the two musicians form a band inspired by the music they'd been trading. The band's debut LP is Painted Doll, and the record's acid trip-esque cover art was created by Hill himself, who calls the colorful collage "something I would have drawn on my notebook back in high school after too much Robitussin."
"The Painted Doll record was a blast to make," says Hill. "Chris is a death metal legend from the Bay Area and I'm a guy from Cleveland who worships the Kinks. Throw in our mutual love for obscure Dutch bands from the seventies and you've got Painted Doll."
Painted Doll has announced U.S. tour dates in support of the debut, including supporting Monster Magnet on its only planned U.S. live shows March 29-30. The just-announced gigs are as follows:
