I first discovered this band due to the their initial announcement for playing ProgPower USA IX, but their performance was canceled due to immigration issues I think. Anyway if a band is playing the fest that I hold near and dear to my heart then I check them out. I was interested how they would fit within my Progressive/Power Metal personal inventory and I must say they fit about as nicely as a pair of thigh high boots on a stripper.
They began in 2001 and recorded a demo with the original lineup of the band. Though once the demo was really starting to gain them some popularity 3 original members left leaving Mario and Andreas as the only original members. With this lineup they secured a record deal with Napalm Records and have opened for DIO in their home country as well as toured with MORGANA LEFAY, KAMELOT and THRESHOLD.
After the first few spins through the album I can say that I thoroughly enjoy the faster paced tracks, and thought the slower tempo ones weren't as enthralling and attention grabbing. There are definitely some highlights on the album, for instance To Stone She Turned. This track really got me with it coming full force out the gate and messing around. The guitar tone is great as it is throughout the rest of the album. I love the double bass in the chorus, it makes it sound more unique than other songs. This track is also possibly the most original, since in quite a few of the other tacks I hear a little too much SONATA ARCTICA's influence. This influence is particularly obvious during some choruses on the album when the vocal melody sounds like it was pulled directly from Reckoning Night, but I am having a hard time placing the exact SONATA song from the top of my head. The chorus for Coldness Kills is a perfect example of this.
Derelict is another favorite of mine from this disc, due to the hard-hitting nature of the track. I just find that I need a little extra punch in my Prog and have a hard time dealing with the slower tracks. The 'gang' vocals are an interesting touch that you don't get very often in Prog at all. Oceans Of Ruby has the same effect on my auditory senses. The chorus on this track is really nice; it has certain quality that slightly reminds me another band that I have seen at ProgPower USA, but my memory is failing me.
On the whole, the disc needs a little improvement here and there, but I can see this band doing quite well for them in the future. Fallen Sanctuary could be recommended to anyone that likes Melodic Metal or Prog Metal ala SONATA ARCTICA as previously stated.
