He has used his celebrity to help raise awareness about the disorder, particularly among those within the music community. Additionally,Spitzand his wife,Candi, are strong supporters ofAutism Speaksand have recently been featured in one of the organization's videos promoting its autism walks (see below).

Spitzunderwent open-heart surgery on June 5, 2009 after it was discovered that the main artery to his heart was almost "completely closed".
